The composers manage to uphold to the textual and contextual standards of what a hymn entails, while also keeping up with the requirements of the notion of rhyme. This paper aims to disclose the effect of rhyme as utilised in some of the hymns found in the hymnbook. Forms of rhyme that are assonant rhyme, consonant rhyme, and alliteration rhyme, will be explored as part of the discussions. The key concept that is going to be discussed is the repetition of similar sounds, which is the driving force of rhyme creation and the basis on which rhyme is achieved. Moreover, a conclusion will be provided, where the summary and concluding remarks are provided. \nKeywords: Hymns, Rhyme, Assonant, Consonant, Alliteration \nIntroduction \nRhyme is one of the stylistic devices whose employment in literary genres, such as hymns, is inevitable, mainly because hymns are composed to be sung. Rhyme then creates rhythm which is a prominent element in hymns. Its prominence comes into effect when singing. It is, therefore, arguable that hymns of various churches employ this device to create the musical element in hymns. \nSo far, very little has been done to study hymns, analysing this output in hymns, based on the hymnal Lifela tsa Sione. Maake (2021) whose masters work this article is based on, is, so far, the only one who has done so. There are also very few researchers who have written about rhyme in hymns. For instance, Ngcongwana (1984) briefly touches on end rhyme as observed \nVol. 78 | No. 12/1 | Dec 2022 \nDOI: 10.21506/j. ponte.2022.12.15 International Journal of Sciences and Research \nin some SeSotho, isiXhosa and isiZulu hymns, where he concludes that the choice of words in the hymns creates various forms of rhyme. \nThe concept of rhyme \nBradley (2009: 50) defines rhyme as “the concordance of sound, it works by establishing ahabit of expectation in listeners’ minds, conditioning them to identify patterns of sounds, to connect the words the mind instinctively recognizes as related yet distinct.” Ngoepe (2007: 47) adds on the above definition when he views rhyme as an artistic device that contains an element of repeated syllables, in words that normally occur at or mark the end of a poetic line. According to Abrams and Harpham (2015: 347 – 349),“… rhyme consists of the repetition, in the rhyming words, of the last stressed vowel and of all the speech sounds following that vowel.” \nDeducing from the above definitions, one may define rhyme as a stylistic device that involves the creation of harmony or melody in poetic or musical lines, by repeating syllables that have similar sounds. Furthermore, Sharma (2018: 33 – 38) explains that rhyme may be classified according to the nature of similarity of the rhyming words, its positioning in the stanza and poetic lines and according to its semantic value. This study will be focusing only on rhyme according to the nature of similarity. The next section discusses functions of rhyme. \nFunctions of rhyme \nRhyme, in any music genre, finds its purpose to add the essence of spirituality that communicates to people’s inner beings, more especially in church hymns, where the core content speaks about abstract ideas such as faith, love and perseverance. It is with rhyme, amongst other stylistic devices, that people connec","cbCaio9T7xE0CD9P","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaio9T7xE0CD9P","pdf",361452,"English","# Introduction\n# The concept of rhyme\n# Functions of rhyme\n# Forms of rhyme","[{\"question\":\"What is the central focus of the paper?\",\"answer\":\"The paper focuses on the effect of rhyme in selected hymns from the hymnbook Lifela tsa Sione (2013).
