the nature and dignity of theteaching brothers'vocation.The official Latin text of this letteris in Acta Apostolicae Sedis,46(1954),202-5.SeveralEnglish translations have appeared in our country.Commen-tarium pro religiosis,33(1954),150-61,published the Latintext,with some annotations by Father A.Gutiérrez,C.M.F.,andsome interesting background.  \nAccording to the Commentarium,the procurators generalof eight institutes of teaching brothers have the custom of meet-ing in Rome and discussing their mutual problems.The insti-tutes are:Christian Brothers;Christian Brothers of Ireland;Marists;Marianists;Brothers of Christian Instruction of Ploer-mel;Brothers of the Sacred Heart;Brothers of St.Gabriel;andthe Xaverian Brothers.The main point discussed in theirmeeting in the spring of 1953 was the problem of vocations totheir institutes,and especially the very delicate problem of mis-understanding by the clergy.Deeply concerned about this prob-lem,the procurators general decided to ask His Holiness for anofficial statement concerning the nature,dignity,and value ofthe teaching brothers'vocation and apostolate.Thus,with theapproval of their own superiors and of the Sacred Congregationof Religious,they addressed a letter to the Pope.The Frenchtext of their letter,dated October 15,1953,is given in theCommentarium pro religiosis.  \n# The Annotations\n\nSince
