The author explains how Vietnamese romantic traditions shaped early emotional themes, then describes how English, Spanish, and French opened new freedoms of expression. A travel-inspired sequence across places and communities follows, culminating in poems spanning haiku, villanelle, and reflective works. \n# A POET RYCOLLECTI ON\n\nJOIE DE VIVRE \nDigitized by the Internet Archivein 2022 with funding fromKahle/Austin Foundation \nMark Flanagan in grasping at the Qndefinabledefined Poetry as “the chiseled marble of language;it's apaint-splattered canvas-but the poet uses words and thecanvas is you.” \nIt seems to me that I have been writing poetry forthe last 20yrs.Before I even knew what love was or couldeloquently define it,I was writing about it.I realized thatit was because of my Vietnamese background.Vietnameseculture, music and poetry are firmly rooted in romanticism.Echoes of lost love, betrayal, and heartbreak littered thenotebook pages of school girls in flowing white dresses(áodài).They made butterflies out of flowers and pressedthem among the pages of their tho con cóc.Romanticism.As women they became dam dang, chiu dưng and hy sinh-romantic words to describe the typical Vietnamesemother and wife:responsible, reliable, withstandinghardships and sacrifices.Such romantic notions werebrainwashed into a young child through songs that itsmother or aunt would sing while rocking the baby at thehammock.Growing up,if the child is a boy,he wouldunconsciously try to find the perfect woman fitting thisself-sacrificial image. If the child is a girl, she would bepressured to become this perfect woman.Lucky for me,Idid not grow up in Vietnam-though that is not to say thatthe pressure wasn't there. \nnlucky for me,having left Vietnam at 13,I wascaught amongst two worlds.I instantly fell in love withthe culture of the West where one pulls oneself up by thebootstraps and don't blame your failures on anyone elsebut yourself. Not so romantic notions.I decided long agothat I would not measure up to the ideal image of aVietnamese woman, and that I would not even try. \nHowever,through poetry,I could very well write about it.I fell in love with English. The freedom of form, ofexpression,of English vocabulary balanced with theromanticism of the East provided the perfect forumwherein I could express myself.I fell in love with love. \n1 \nSuch yearning, measured heart beats keep time with therhythm of life. \nI once again uprooted myself at 26,this time by choice, and moved to California. The Golden State and its eclectic mix ofpeople inspired the imagination.I once again fell in love withanother language:Spanish, and its twin brother French. At onepoint,I was learning both languages at the same time and wasquite confused. However, the conjoint art of latin romance \naccelerated my language skills and I became quite fluent real fast.I started to travel extensively.Lo and behold,I started to findpatterns in the empty beaches of Panama,in the glowing friendlyfaces of people of Costa Rica,in the hardworking laborers ofMexico, and yes-right here in California-in the warm embraceof my own expatriate community of Saigon Nhỏ Vietnam inOrange County. \nhe following is a celebration of that journey.Oflost love and redemption.Of separation and discovery.Ofgrowing up,growing old,and growing wise.I hope youenjoy it.I welcome all conments and suggestions by emailat:perfect.rhymes@gmail.com \n# What others said
