It describes a 10-year Sabah, Malaysia research project that tested natural regeneration against replanting with one, four, or sixteen native tree species across experimental plots. Results show that diverse native mixtures, especially sixteen species, deliver stronger regrowth, and the findings stress protecting undisturbed biodiversity and avoiding conversion to agriculture.","Restoring a Tropical Forest: The View from Sabah \nMissionAssist \nEnglish Environment \nRestoring a Tropical Forest: The View from Sabah \nThank you for using MissionAssist Shell Books \nWhere an asterisk (* ) appears in the text , the word after it is likely to have local variations and you should change it to suit your own particular setting. \nInstead of using personal names , we have used * M1, * M2 or * F1, * F2 etc to show male or female characters. Such forests are therefore vital reservoirs of biodiversity. They are also major carbon sinks, helping to reduce global warming. The sizeable amounts of oxygen that these forests can release, under optimum conditions, are what help to keep the world’s animal life, including humans, alive and well. Not for nothing is the vast Amazon rainforest described as the lungs of the planet! \nUndisturbed rainforest like this provides the optimum habitat for the orang-utan depicted on the cover of this book. \nHowever, huge numbers of tropical trees are lost on a daily basis to logging—some of it legal, much of it illegal—and forest fires are an ever-present danger. Even a small, local fire may cause permanent damage by thinning the tree canopy so that wind and sun dry out the leaf litter beneath the trees, making a bigger and more devastating fire more likely in the future. \nGradually the world has woken up to the fact that existing forests need to be preserved as far as possible from fires and felling; at the same time the replanting of areas that have been logged or burned needs to go ahead as quickly and effectively as possible. \nIn 2002 researchers in Sabah, Malaysia took up the challenge of finding the best way to restore clear-felled former forest by planning a 10-year project to compare the results of different methodologies. The site chosen for their project, part of a publicly owned forest reserve, covered 500 hectares (1,235 acres), which they divided into 125 experimental plots. \nSome of these plots were left to r","cbCaidibjbWZUI9R","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidibjbWZUI9R","pdf",351187,6,1,12,"English","en",105,"# Why Tropical Forests Matter\n# Threats: Logging and Fires\n# Sabah Restoration Project (2002–2012)\n## Experimental Design and Treatments\n## Results from Satellite Observations\n# Implications for Replanting and Biodiversity Conservation","[{\"question\":\"Why are tropical forests important to the planet?\",\"answer\":\"They support vast biodiversity, act as major carbon sinks, and under optimal conditions help release oxygen that sustains animal life.
