Their aims were threefold:  \n1. Reforestation: restoring the species that were in place before the hurricane, by nurturing those trees that remained, along with their seedlings — either in situ or in a nursery — and also propagating them by vegetative means such as layering.  \n2. Rehabilitation: monitoring and where necessary improving the flow of water around the mangroves to give them the best chance of renewal.  \n3. Restoration: a complex, long-term process by which efforts would be made to restore the total environment that had originally enabled the mangrove forests to expand and thrive.  \nWhy would people want to put in all that effort to reforest, rehabilitate and restore a habitat that could so easily be destroyed by the next hurricane that came along? The answer lies in the unique nature of the mangrove tree itself.  \nBecause they can cope with living in tidal areas where they are exposed to a daily intake of salt that would be lethal to many plants, mangroves have established themselves along many coasts, forming an effective barrier between land and sea. This barrier helps to prevent coastal erosion and slows the ingress of salt water into crop lands located along the coast.
