todemand.  \nWood’s concerns in early 2002,however,went beyond just possibleexpansion of the building.Technol-ogy was also on her mind.Automa-tion and telecommunication hadpermitted the library to enhance ser-vices to the public,but technol-ogy does not stand still.Woodwanted Richmond Library po-sitioned to seamlessly imple-ment the “next new thing”inlibrary service for the 5,700people of Marlborough.Con-vinced of the need for a long-range plan,Wood encouragedher board to consider thelibrary's future.  \nThe Richmond Library Boardwas no stranger to planning,hav-ing completed two previouslong-range plans.In December2001,the library had conducteda survey of residents and hadbeen heartened by the impres-sive 20%return rate.Timing fora new planning project seemed  \ngood because,obviously,the publiccared about its library.Timing wasalso good because the State Library'sLSTA grant program presentedRichmond with an opportunity tohire the services of a paid
