In this fourth volume, we have curated a collection of interdisciplinary essays that bring together two or more academic disciplines of PPE—Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics. This year ’s edition showcases the intersections and interconnections between the three disciplines of PPE, hence demonstrating the multifaceted nature of our study. \nIn these seven essays, you will find many thought-provoking explorations. These range from essays that grapple with social and economic issues in Singapore, such as “Meritocracy’s Paradox: Examining Singapore’s Struggle with Inequality,” as well as more abstract essays that explore the nature of knowledge, such as “The Importance of Theories of Knowledge in Understanding Political Order.” We hope that these essays provide you with a glimpse of the academic insights that can be gleaned from PPE. \nLastly, I would like to thank all writers for their contributions, as well as the Academics Committee for their support in compiling and editing the essays. With this, the Academics Committee signs off for AY 2023/24, and we hope that you have enjoyed reading our previous publications—Symposium—and will enjoy reading Volume IV of the Republic. \nThank you! \nNg Shang Wen \nAcademics Director, AY 2023/24 \nNUS FASS PPE Club \nMAXIMISING ONTOLOGICAL COMMITMENT: THE INDISPENSABILITY \nARGUMENT FROM ECONOMICS \nChoo Ying Hua, David | National University of Singapore Edited by Lim Kian Ian \nAbstract \nThis paper extends the Quine-Putnam indispensability argument for mathematical realism to the realm of the social sciences, as it is usually presented with a view from the natural sciences. Specifically, it will investigate the field of economics since it relies most heavily on mathematics. It will explore how abstract mathematical entities are indispensable to our best economic theories and fulfil the demands of Quinean naturalism. While economists could draw meaningful conclusions without mathematics, mathematics is still necessary for these conclusions to be substantive and thus instructive for policymaking, which is ultimately the purpose of economic study. Therefore, this paper confirms the conclusion ofthe indispensability argument, that we should have ontological commitment to abstract mathematical entities, including entities found within the field of economics such as game theoretic models. \nI. Introduction \nHalf the thesis for mathematical realism is that mathematical entities exist independent of our mind or language.1 The Quine-Putnam indispensability argument is generally considered the most compelling account for this metaphysical claim, as it is justified on the indispensability of mathematics to empirical science. However, most presentations ofthe argument are motivated by mathematics in the natural sciences, which may overlook the non-trivial applications of mathematics outside this realm. \n","cbCaiqHH0F6IQgRc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqHH0F6IQgRc","pdf",2461014,95,"English","# Foreword\n# Maximising Ontological Commitment: The Indispensability Argument from Economics\n## Abstract\n## I.
