It recalls pioneering journeys by ancestors in 1798, describing the practical steps of building shelter and clearing land, then contrasts external terrain with the interior terrain of making poems. The foreword connects labor, teaching, listening, meditation, and prayer-like attention, inviting readers to follow syllables toward an opening where a secret self and an uncovering story can be Foreword:A Brief Glossary of Work\n\nIn 1798,Ascha and Winthrop Shepard,my far-back,pioneeringgrandparents,traveled by oxen to the craggy outpost of the TugHill Plateau,a rise of land between Lake Ontario and the BlackRiver Valley,a place that gets more snow than anywhere eastof the Rockies, sometimes five feet in one day. They werefarmers without a farm. They first had to cobble together ashelter in the thick woods while they built a lean-to.Next,they built a sod hut and cleared space to make a cabin.Andthen they built the cabin. The hard work came, though, asthey slashed through the forest to make room for crops. \nMaking a poem is one form of pioneering, but the terrainis interior. \nFootsteps.Deer tracks.Snow.Who am l?Each \nhoof print gathers moonscoring a trail \nof long vowels I followand sound out. \nThis is one kind of prayer,to walk where the deer walk. \n*** \nI am from a long line of hard workers. In fact,I enjoy hardwork almost as much as I do the supreme sloth of readingall day. Also,I work in the college classroom, with studentswho require some kind of preparatory attention.Althoughthey may need guidance with their academic talents, theyare clever beyond measure and can identify falsehoods withexquisite conviction. They are highly developed in discerninga bluff. This has been an enormous help to me,for my work isto remember who I am.With a few friends,I've cultivated away of teaching, which is really another form of listening, ormeditating,or praying. \nIn the classroom,I hear myself,Who are you? \nReader,followa path of syllables until \nyou arriveat an opening, until \nyou uncover a story where yoursecret self lives. \nWriter,listen,you have the hard part, \nto trek songsburied far below, \nto make audible the mystery asif your life depended on it. \nOf course, you may also chooseto do nothing. \nNeither way will be easy.","cbCailTBs7niWk9Y","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailTBs7niWk9Y","pdf",2225125,"English","# Foreword: A Brief Glossary of
