The questions asked students to evaluate the statement providing references to religious and non-religious points of view. We have provide a personal humanist perspective on each of the statements to support students with including non-religious views in their answers.\nFor further helpful information on effectively including humanist and non-religious points of views in answers to RS GCSE questions see understandinghumanism.org.uk/gcse\n‘Euthanasia is never the best option’\n‘I believe in compassion and empathy and would not want someone to suffer needlessly. People should have autonomy over when and how they die, rather than being forced to suffer and die in an undignified manner. Euthanasia can allow an individual to say farewells in a peaceful and personal manner, which can be beneficial to them as well as their family members. Family members can also be spared the pain of watching a loved one suffer, which is best for their happiness and well-being. We should have choice and control over our death, just as we have in life.’\nYvonne Letson\n‘Euthanasia is never the best option’\n‘Although we may not like to dwell on it, it is an inevitable truth that we will all die and that, for some, despite everything that modern medicine can offer, the final days, weeks, or months will be deeply unpleasant. I have seen that myself. I strongly believe that both out of compassion and out of respect for the autonomy of others at the end of their lives, that once life has become nothing but suffering and all meaning and purpose and pleasure has gone, a dying person should have the right to end their life at a time they choose. They should not be forced to hang on to the bitter end. Of course, there are dangers and so there need to be strict safety measures. However, evidence from other countries shows that assisted dying can be made to work, and the vulnerable protected whilst helping the terminally ill avoid a painful and degrading death.’\nTim Purches\n‘There is nothing wrong with euthanaisa’\n‘As a humanist, I believe that people should have personal autonomy and that they should be free to decide for themselves what happens to their own bodies. We should have compassion for people who wish to end their lives due to terminal illness or other incurable suffering. In such circumstances, I believe we should help those who have expressed a clear and uncoerced wish to end their lives to do so in as dignified and painless a way as possible. Safeguards are important, to prevent harm or abuse of vulnerable people. Evidence from other countries shows that assisted dying laws can be introduced successfully and with sufficient safeguards to avoid such problems.’\nCaroline Wallace\n‘There is nothing wrong with euthanaisa’\n‘As a humanist, I agree. I prefer the term ‘assisted dying’, as the focus is more on the person choosing to die and their own decision to do so. I believe in human self determination and dignity. Giving the choice of assisted dying is the moral, ethical and kind option in many cases of incurable suffering. I do not believe in a soul, or an afterlife, or anything outside of this one life we have. Why should someone be forced to endure such immense suffering at the end of their life, when they know there is no hope to get better? I hope that if I ever become terminally ill and am incurably suffering, I am able to choose a dignified death. I have witnessed family members suffer at the ends of their lives, with no chance that they will ever get better. As long as there are systems put in place of checks and balances in order to ensure people are not feeling forced into it, then I believe allowing assisted dying is the far more ethical path. People have the right to self determination.
