Somers","","Religious Education A Necessity is an address by Arthur S. Somers delivered at Central Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York on January 4, 1925. The speech argues that enduring education for children requires a moral foundation grounded in religion, stressing responsibility toward God, conscience, and the development of the intellect, will, and ethical life. It reviews longstanding warnings from religious authorities and leaders against schooling without God, portraying such education as an omen of social and national decline.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/religion-spirituality/","Religion their force, their intelli-gence,and their philosophy to the discussion of the vitalneeds of a people,I am profoundly grateful for the distin·guished honor that comes through the invitation to inaug-urate with the coming of the new year, the discussion thatfrom week to week will engage the serious attention of themembers of this congregation. \nHowever unworthy I may be,it is significant that thefirst of these discussions should eall us to ponder for a mo-ment upon one of the greatest needs of the time—a needthat presses more heavily with each new day;a compellingneed that will make us face without fear and in the frank-est possible manner, the question,\"Whither are we goingand what are we going to do?” \nI am not indulging in any extravagances nor am I un-mindfulof the weight of our problems—many perplexing一when I say that religious education or an education witha moral background founded upon religion is the thingthat this nation, yes, the whole world most needs,if it isto endure as a safe and happy abode for our children, theirchildren, and beyond to the limitless generations yet to beborn. \nIs the theme a new one?Not at all!For fifty years,Ihave heard, week after week,in eloquent language, thatthere is no permanent value to education that lacks a back-ground of moral standards founded upon religion.Myexperience during most of these years has been limitedto the church in which I was born and from whose altar Ihave never had reason to turn away.It is no reflectionupon any ereed—and surely we will not be charged with \n2 \nnarrow sectarianism—if we submit that among the great-est contributions and soundest reasons justifying theseconvictions, will be found the encyclicals of Pius IX,LeoXIII,and their successors down to the present time, allof whom were concerned with the salvation of the world, and who constantly warned against the evils and dangersinto which we were plunging. They consistently pro-claimed that if humanity is to be saved for humanity'ssake and if we are to return to God for His sake,we mustkeep alive the fires of religion, and that only through aneducation that teaches man to understand his responsibili-ties and to know his God,to love and serve Him here onearth, can this hope be fulfilled. This has been the themeof the world's greatest leaders and thinkers for centuriesand has engaged in our own time the earnest thought ofthe leading teachers of all creeds and denominations.Ineed only to refer to Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes,a Metho-dist,Rev.Doctor David Hummell Greer,an Episcopalian,Rev.Washington Gladden,a
