The Relative VCE Performance measure shows the proportion of Year 12 students in each school who experienced either high, medium or low relative performance over the final four years of school. Relative VCE Performance is available across the VCE subjects in the English and Mathematics study groups only. \n How is it calculated? \nThis measure is calculated by using the study scores in English or Mathematics subjects with the same student’s Year 9 NAPLAN scale score for Reading, Writing or Numeracy. \nFor each VCE English and Mathematics subject, students are grouped according to their Year 9 NAPLAN result, are ranked using their study scores, and then grouped into quartiles (groups of 25%) so that: \n• the top 25% are classified as having ‘high’ relative performance \n• the middle two quartiles are classified as having ‘medium’ relative performance \n• the lowest 25% are classified as having ‘low’ relative performance. \nOnly students completing Year 12 exactly four years from their Year 9 NAPLAN year are included in the dataset, and will include VCE study scores obtained by students who completed the subject in Year 11. \nPED_SRC0911 \nPerformance and Evaluation Division / Strategy and Secondary School Reform group / \n/ 1 \nRelative VCE Performance \nThe diagram below (Figure 1) shows how students’ different levels of performance are divided up relative to a common starting point from Year 9 NAPLAN. \nRelative VCE Performance is calculated for each of the following combinations of NAPLAN and VCE: \n• NAPLAN Reading to each VCE English subject \n• NAPLAN Writing to each VCE English subject \n• NAPLAN Numeracy to each VCE Mathematics subject \nFigure 1: Relative VCE Performance \nYear 9 \nNAPLAN Scale Score \nVCE \nStudy Score \nrelative performance relative performance \nExample: Student A and Student B both achieve a scale score of 605 for Reading on their Year 9 NAPLAN. Student A achieves a study score of 38 in English, whilst Student B achieves a study score of 24 in English. With the same starting score, Student A is seen to have high relative performance, with Student B having low relative performance, due to the difference in study scores, and the performance of their peers who also achieved similar NAPLAN scale scores. \nPED_SRC0916 \nPerformance and Evaluation Division / Strategy and Secondary School Reform group / / 2 \nRelative VCE Performance \nWhere is it reported? \nRelative VCE Performance for individual schools is available through a Panorama Dashboard, only for schools with VCE students. The dashboard shows the percentage of students and study scores with high, medium or low relative performance for individual English or Mathematics subjects and aggregated for the English study group and Mathematics study group. \nFigure 2: Relative VCE Performance dashboard \nWhat does it tell me? \nThe data shows the potential impact your school has had on the final years of a student’s education. It uses a student’s Year 9 NAPLAN scale scores, as a starting point, and their VCE study scores to attribute a relative performance. The percentage of students with high and medium relative VCE performance within your school, for each NAPLAN and subject combination, can be compared across similar schools, your network and the state. \nPED_SRC0916 \nPerformance and Evaluation Division / Strategy and Secondary School Reform group / / 3 \nRelative VCE Performance \n How are same school year 9 and same school year 11 different? \nThe table included on the dashboard provides further details on the relative performance of students, based on their previous enrolment at the school. Same school in Year 9 refers to any student who completed NAPLAN in Year 9 at the same school that they were enrolled","cbCaitibqPqW3fwO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitibqPqW3fwO","pdf",1639264,"English","# What is it?\n# How is it calculated?\n# Where is it reported?\n# What does it tell me?\n# How are same school year 9 and same school year 11 different?\n# What are the data limitations?\n# What is the best way to use it?\n# What other similar measures are available?","[{\"question\":\"What does Relative VCE Performance measure?\",\"answer\":\"It categorises students’ VCE study scores as high, medium or low relative performance compared with other students who achieved similar Year 9 NAPLAN scale scores.\"},{\"question\":\"How is Relative VCE Performance calculated?\",\"answer\":\"Using VCE study scores in English or Mathematics matched to the same student’s Year 9 NAPLAN scale score, students are ranked and grouped into quartiles: top 25% high, middle two quartiles medium, bottom 25% low.\"},{\"question\":\"Where can schools see Relative VCE Performance?\",\"answer\":\"Relative VCE Performance for individual schools is available through a Panorama Dashboard, showing percentages and study score distributions for English/Mathematics subjects and aggregated study groups.\"}]","Relative VCE Performance - Fact Sheet | PDF",1789907150]
