examination of relationships among universitycharacteristics and job offers, employment status, job attitudes, and jobperformance of newly-hired accounting graduates. It was found that universitycharacteristics are generally not related to job attitudes and job performance.Afew characteristics correlated with the total number of job offers, andcharacteristics associated with wealth and status correlated with receiving joboffers from prestigious accounting firms.Several explanations are suggested forthe results—including threshold effects, prestige effects, and influence of thework environment. Some characteristics are salient to a particular country. For example,Canadians distinguish their universities by whether they areFrench-speaking or English-speaking(Church &Gillingham,1985).Americans and Japanese distinguish between public and private universities(Burn et al.,1971;Hall,1982).On the other hand, other universitycharacteristics may be salient across many countries.Such characteristics mightinclude size, wealth, quality of entering students, and selectivity(Burn et al.,1971). \nUniversity characteristics are important because young people often select auniversity based on its standing on salient characteristics(Church &Gillingham,1985;Sanders,1986).Also,many students, their parents, anduniversity officials believe that university characteristics influence jobopportunities and job behaviour. For example, students and their parents oftenthink that different types of universities afford unique career advantages(Baueret al.,1988;Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching,1986;Sanders,1986).University administrators foster this belief by touting the careeradvantages that their schools provide(e.g.Brewster,1966).And manyemployers recruit at universities selectively. They assume that the type ofcollege an individual attended will influence job performance(cf.Rynes &Boudreau,1986;Sasaki,1981).The purpose of this study is to examine thisissue.Do university characteristics relate to early job outcomes?Morespecifically, which characteristics
