In addition, cultural exposure gained from reading broadly provides levels of understanding that contribute to increases in both personal and academic proficiency. \nWhile we focus on in-depth study of literature in our English courses, we strongly recommend that students supplement their study with other challenging literature as well. The English Department has compiled a list of authors and specific works that will provide students appropriate preparation for precollege testing as well as for university studies. In addition, we selected books that would fit different reading levels and would appeal to a variety of interests and personalities. \nWe encourage students to use this list as a starting point for their personal reading and recommend that college-bound students complete a significant number of these books before high school graduation. We also encourage parents to consider the possibility of reading along with their students. \n\n| Recommended Reading for Freshmen and Sophomores | |\n| --- | --- |\n| Author | Title |\n| Angelou, Maya | I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings |\n| Card, Orson Scott | Ender's Game |\n| Crane, Stephen | The Red Badge of Courage |\n| Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan | The Hound of the Baskervilles |\n| Dumas, Alexandre | The Count of Monte Cristo |\n| Gaines, Ernest | A Lesson Before Dying |\n| Gibson, William | The Miracle Worker |\n| Hemingway, Ernest | The Old Man And The Sea |\n| Herbert, Frank | Dune |\n| Herriot, James | All Creatures Great and Small |\n| Hinson, S.
