It examines why literature resists the methods that dominate research in the sciences and social sciences, highlighting uniqueness, non-repeatability, and the instability of reader-response evidence. debated atOxford at the end of the nineteenth century.Such a School,it wascontended, would either force lecturers into mere gossip about thelives and times of authors in order for them to have something tosay,or else quickly become a dry philological study of the historyof the language, which,by usurping the place of Latin and Greekwould,in the acerbic comment of Thomas Case,Wayneflete Profes-sor of Moral Philosophy,\"reverse the Renaissance.\"The conserva-tives of course lost and the progressives entered the citadel, wavinga banner reworked from Matthew Arnold that might have read,\"the best that is known and thought in the world includes a gooddeal of English literature”(to which could later have been added\"and a little American\"). \nWell,yes,the crusty old dons, many of whom perhaps knewtheir port vintages at least as well as their English literature, werewrong. But in matters like these it is rare for intelligent persons tobe wholly in error.Arnold himself had serious doubts about mak-ing the study of English a formal curriculum in the university, andthe earliest professors of that study at Oxford and Cambridge,WalterRaleigh and Arthur Quiller-Couch,found considerable difficulty indeciding just what they were to teach. Now,a hundred years later, may be a good time to ask to what extent the old guard could havebeen partly in the right.Literature does in fact constitute an oddobject of study.Reserving the question of what constitutes litera-ture and thinking of it simply as what the ordinary librarian orbook shop manager shelves under that classification, one can recog-nize a number of curious features.First, literary texts are singularand non-repeatable although thoroughly
