Selection followed two search strategies: reviewing tables of contents from 120 peer-reviewed journals and searching Google Scholar/Books with targeted terms covering networks, illicit markets, governance, and trafficking-related activities. Inclusion reflects a broad understanding of organized crime, focusing on crimes, criminals, and social spheres organized by criminals, subject to minimum quality standards and coverage rules.","Trends in Organized Crime (2024) 27:503–527 \n[https://doi.org/10.1007/s12117-024-09551-3](https://doi.org/10.1007/s12117-024-09551-3) \nPUBLICATION MONITOR \nRecent Publications on Organized Crime: the year 2023 \nKlaus von Lampe1 \nAccepted: 14 October 2024 / Published online: 9 November 2024 \n© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024 \nThe study of organized crime continues to attract scholars across the globe and from a variety of academic disciplines, as evidenced by the collection of publications presented here. Listed are more than 370 English-language publications on organized crime and related topics from the year 2023. Books are included by copyright date. Journal articles and chapters in edited volumes are included by the year of the issue or volume they appear in. Pertinent publications were identified applying two search strategies. First, the tables of content of 120 peer-reviewed journals across various academic fields of study were reviewed. Second, Google Scholar and Google Books were searched for relevant literature, using different search terms, namely “organized crime,” “criminal network,” “illicit network,” “illegal market,” “criminal governance,” “extra-legal governance,” “illegal governance,” “mafia,” “racketeering,”“smuggling,” and “trafficking.” Authors and publishers also provided information. In cases where the thematic scope of a publication was not discernible from the title, the abstract and sometimes the full text were consulted. \nThe aim was to draw up a list of academic publications that reflect the multi-facetted nature of the study of organized crime, understood broadly to encompass the study of the organization of crimes, the study of the organization of criminals, and the study of the organization of social spheres by criminals. Publications that fall within this thematic scope were included unless – in the case of not well-established open-access outlets – minimum quality standards were not met. This does not necessarily mean that a publication not listed here is deemed to be of inferior quality, as relevant literature may well have been overlooked in the search. \nAll articles from volume 26 of Trends in Organized Crime are included without a separate examination of the thematic scope. \nAbid, M., Bothello, J., Ul-Haq, S., Ahmadsimab, A.
