Using a single camera with continuous video streaming, the system employs machine learning for piece recognition and adapts to occlusions, unexpected piece adjustments, and illumination changes. It renders a live graphic of the board state, last move, and recommended move, then evaluates each detected move with a state-of-the-art chess engine for best-move selection. The approach is positioned for smartphone app deployment or use in professional competitions as a cost-effective alternative to electronic chess boards.","UC Riverside \nUCR Honors Capstones 2023-2024 \nTitle \nREAL TIME TRACKING AND ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL CHESS GAMES USING COMPUTER VISION AND MACHINE LEARNING \nPermalink \n[https://escholarship.org/uc/item/31d7k315](https://escholarship.org/uc/item/31d7k315) \nAuthor \nBugarin, Adolfo I \nPublication Date \n2024-07-24 \n[eScholarship.org](eScholarship.org) Powered by the California Digital Library \nUniversity of California \nREAL TIME TRACKING AND ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL CHESS GAMES USING \nCOMPUTER VISION AND MACHINE LEARNING \nBy \nAdolfo Israel Bugarin \nA capstone project submitted for Graduation with University Honors \nMay 20, 2024 \nUniversity Honors \nUniversity of California, Riverside \nAPPROVED \nDr. Salman Asif \nDepartment of Electrical and Computer Engineering \nDr. Richard Cardullo, Howard H Hays Jr. Chair University Honors \nABSTRACT \nThis project develops a robust chess vision system capable of detecting and tracking a game of chess under a variety of lighting conditions and angles consistent with the abilities of a human. It includes a graphic that displays the current state of the chess game, the last move made, and the best move to make. It works using a single camera and a continuous video stream and uses machine learning for piece recognition. It is able to adapt to different viewing angles, changes in lighting, obstructions on the board, or unexpected adjustments or movements of pieces. However, unlike a human, it runs every move it detects through a state-of-the-art chess engine to determine the best possible move to make in response. This system can be implemented in a consumer smartphone app or be used during professional chess competitions asa much more economical alternative to electronic chess computer boards. \nACKNOWLEDGEMENTS \nI would like to thank Dr. Salman Asif for being my faculty-mentor and providing me his support and assistance in completing my capstone. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Bree Lang for her involvement in the early stages of my capstone and her willingness to attend my capstone presentation. I would additionally like to acknowledge Dr. Richard Cardullofor making this capstone experience possible and working with me when complications arose during the development of my capstone. \nTABLE OF CONTENTS \n1.
