It has been written to help them encourage those children to read and enjoy books in the home so that they will be better prepared for reading and learning when they go to school. The book provides easy to follow steps for introducing young children to how to read a book and for showing them that reading can be fun and enjoyable.  \nReading is a good thing to do  \nIn many communities in the Solomon Islands there are people who haven't been able to learn how to read. Maybe because they haven't been able to go to school or they don't have any books, or because teaching was in a language they didn't know.  \nThis book has some ways to help you read with your children so that they get excited about learning how to read and can use their reading to learn new things.  \nHelp your children become better readers at home and at school.  \nGetting ready to read to young ones  \nThere are many ways that we can help small children start to enjoy reading. One way is for them to see adults reading books, magazines, newspapers, or other reading materials at home. Do you have these things in your home?  \nChildren do well in school when they have books at home to read. When you have books at home for children to look at and read stories from, they will be better prepared for when they go to school.  \nWe can read anywhere  \nWhen you share books with children 􀀬nd a quiet place to read where everyone can see the book.  \nWe can read books anywhere--beside the river, at the beach, or in the shade of a tree.  \nAsk the chilren what they can see in the pictures. Ask them to tell you what they think the story is about by looking at the pictures.  \nPictures help to tell a story  \nThe children may not be able to read the words but they can still learn what the story is about by looking at the pictures and can enjoy the story. You many not be very con􀀬dent in your reading but you can also tell the story to your children by looking at the pictures.  \nReading isn't only about being able to read all the words. It's also about the whole family having an enjoyable time sharing the stories together--even just by looking at the pictures.  \nSteps to follow whe reading to young children  \n1. Finding the di􀀳erent parts of the book  \nWhen you read, start by telling your children about the book.  \nTalk about the front cover and what is on it. Talk about how to hold the book the right way up and how to turn the pages carefully. Always read the title page inside the front cover and tell the name of the person who wrote it.  \n2. Front to back, top to bottom, left to right  \nShow the children how to look at the book going from the front to the back, from the top to the bottom of the page, and from left to right.  \nChildren should learn that this is the way to read and handle books. Go through each page and look at the pictures.
