Reader \nVolumell,Number 3 \n# Readers'Club Selection\n\nSearchers at the Gulfby Franklin Russell \nreviewed by William Frenchreprinted with permission from The Globe Magazine,July 4,1970 \nI've never thought of the Gulf of St.Lawrence as a special place.I've sailedthrough it in winter on a freighter and in summer on an ocean liner, flownover it in a DC-3,hauled obliging mackerel from its depths in a fishingboat.I've viewed it from various angles-the rocky Gaspe coast, the redbeaches of Prince Edward Island, the highlands of Cape Breton and thewestern shore of Newfoundland. It always looked much like any otherpiece of ocean, except for an abundance of sea birds and a special qualityof light which just proves there's a lot more going on in the world thanmeets the eye. \nReading Searchers at the Gulf is like discovering that the plain girl nextdoor leads a glamorous secret life. The Gulf of St.Lawrence,as FranklinRussell dramatically demonstrates in his book,is unique,a conjunction oflatitudes and currents and winds and boundaries that produces a specialuniverse teeming with drama above, beneath and around its deceptivelyplacid surface.Russell describes that universe, from microscopic planktonto enormous whales,in a book that is just as unusual as the place it des-cribes.Rarely has the life force, the tremendous creative energy of nature, the interdependence of all creatures, been described with such compellingclarity, \nThe gulf gets its special characteristics from the juxtaposition of polarand tropical influences-the Arctic current from the north and the Atlanticcurrent from the north and the Atlantic gulf stream from the south-bythe extremes of seasonal temperatures and by the great variation in thecoastal perimeter, from the barren sub-Arctic north shore to the lushgardens of Prince Edward Island.Writes Russell:\"Its lack of allegiance tonorth or south or hot or cold made it the most diverse place on earth.” \nIn Russell's narrative, the gulf emerges as a kind of deity, toying withthe billions of creatures of land, sea and air to which it is host, casuallydeciding those will die, these will live, those will eat and these will beeaten, calling down lightning to cause a forest fire, calling up a plague toreduce overpopulation. \nAs far as I recall, the word ecology isn't mentioned in the book.Yetthat is the major subject, implicit throughout-the delicate balance ofnature,in which a sudden shrinking of one species or over-production ofanother can have calamitous effects on a whole chain of living things \nSearchers at the Gulf could be classified as documentary fiction.Russell, whose previous books have established him as a superior nature writer, begins with the known facts about the gulf and superimposes on them anartistic structure. He explains in his introduction that the gulf is too com-plex,too contradictory,to be frozen in fact;only fiction gives it someform of life. This gives him a freedom that straight factual documentarywould restrict. \nTo give the narrative cohesion,he focuses on several characters to playcentral roles-a giant codfish,an eagle,a petrel,a robin,a salmon,a lobsterand a lynx, each one representative of a different life style.(Thereis a fulrange of lesser characters too, from shrimp to caribou.)And to give formto his tale,he follows the rhythm of the seasons, from early spring-heralded by the arrival of the harp seals through the Strait of Belle Isle-through to the end of winter. Each season has its own special signs andcharacteristics, with each species responding to some mysterious signal. \nScientists may shudder at some ofRussell's liberties:a salmon chases adream, plants fall from grace, asturgeon takes a stoic view of hisfunction,an oyster has a patientsense of failure. But in context, they seem only occasionally strainedbeyond reason. \nThere's not one human being inthe book, although the actions of cer-tain of the characters can be interpreted as metaphors of human behavior. \nAt first this absence seems like an oversight;","cbCaind2AqLhJhb8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaind2AqLhJhb8","pdf",3086164,17,"English","# Readers'Club
