While cap and gown purchases may not immediately come to mind as part ofthis problem, it is very much a contributor. In 2022, Americans disposed of over 34 billion pounds of textiles, which is over 100 pounds per person, according to Boston University (Lundberg & Devoy, 2022). With nearly 2,900 students graduating in the 2022-2023 cycle, there’s significant potential for gown collection. Beyond environmental impacts, reducing textile waste intersects with one of our programs’s main points: reducing graduation costs for students. Currently, a full bachelor ’s graduation regalia set including a mortarboard cap, gown, tassel, and stole costs $86 at the Western Washington University student bookstore. A 2021 survey by WWU's Basic Needs Hub reported that 44.7% of Western students faced food insecurity, while 32.1% experienced housing insecurity, with numbers for students of color at 50% . Although this cap and gown donation program was established last spring, this upcoming fall commencement marks the first time students will have the opportunity to receive a cap and gown through the program.  \nThe Graduation Gown Donation Program at WWU has been in existence for one full quarter, with an initial focus on acquiring gowns. So far, 77 gowns have been collected, showing potential for growth. Currently, the gowns from Spring 2024 are stored in boxes located in the Career Services Center. This storage method not only causes wrinkling but is also disorganized in terms of sizes, with limited space for additional storage. Our group faces several challenges: exploring marketing opportunities to raise awareness about the program, establishing an effective mode for donation collection after the commencement ceremonies, managing inventory, determining an effective storage strategy (such as boxes, envelopes, or racks), and planning a system for equitable redistribution.  \nTo attract attention our group decided to name this project the Re-Gown It Program. The mission of this program is to manage the lifecycle of donated graduation regalia from the initial donation to redistribution. Our team has worked towards a standard operating procedure that can be utilized for years to come basing our analysis on benchmarking data received from peer universities and others that were kind enough to offer information. An overview of our implementation is as follows: after collection occurs at commencement ceremonies, gowns are stored for the quarter, before being made available for reuse. Students can easily acquire a gown by visiting Career Services between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, from now until commencement on December 14th, 2024.
