An article in this year’s report details how these challenges have evolved for patients and their caregivers and how rheumatologists who care for them \nhave adapted their practices to address the barriers and unique concerns of patients with rare diseases. \nRare rheumatologic disease can also strike people across a wide range of ages. You can read how hydroxychloroquine, a drug rst touted and later discredited as a treatment for COVID-19, has proven to be a potential game-changer in the prevention of neonatal lupus and congenital heart block in infants born to women who are positive for anti-Ro/SSA antibodies. Another article chronicles how awareness of rare but striking pulmonary complications of children with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis has grown in pediatric rheumatology clinics across the United States and other parts of the world where early treatment with biologics has been in place. \nMeanwhile, the various forms of vasculitis, most of which are rare, occur across a range of age groups. We learn that imaging has a big role to play in teasing out the clinico-pathologic patterns that may help to distinguish the middle- to older-aged adults who develop giant cell arteritis from patients who have Takayasu’s arteritis, which may strike at younger age. An informative study of remission maintenance treatment regimens for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, another that can affect mid-to older-age adults, is also covered in the report. \nElsewhere in the report, we learn about treatments for oral ulcers in patients with Behçet’s syndrome; evidence suggesting that chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis and SAPHO syndrome are part of the same clinical entity; as well as predictors for progression from Raynaud’s phenomenon to systemic sclerosis and atypical presentations of renal crisis in scleroderma. \nI hope that you enjoy the report! \n–Jeff Evans, Editor, Rheumatology News \nA NOTE FROM NORD \nWelcome to the \nRheumatology! \nsecond issue of the Rare Diseases Report: The National Organization for Rare Disorders is \nproud to collaborate with Rheumatology News and medical experts to bring you the most up-to-date information on timely topics related to caring for individuals","cbCainemJ3HhDOSE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainemJ3HhDOSE","pdf",8026076,24,"English","# Editor’s Note\n## A Note from NORD\n# Selected Articles (Highlights)","[{\"question\":\"How does the report describe the effect of COVID-19 on rare rheumatologic disease care?\",\"answer\":\"The editor’s note explains that the COVID-19 pandemic created barriers and unique concerns, and that rheumatologists adapted their practices to address patients and caregivers.\"},{\"question\":\"Which topics are covered under the selected articles?\",\"answer\":\"Selected topics include topical treatment for oral ulcers in Behçet’s syndrome, congenital heart block risk in anti-Ro/SSA-positive women, pediatric lung disorders in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, vasculitis distinctions, and scleroderma-related renal crisis presentations.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the NORD note emphasize about rare disease advances and communication?\",\"answer\":\"It stresses collaboration to share up-to-date information, acknowledges rapid advances in diagnosis and treatment resources, and highlights NORD’s role in connecting medical experts, physicians, patients, and caregivers.\"}]","Rare Diseases Report - Rheumatology - November 2020 Selected Articles | PDF",1790496880]
