Rani, whose name means queen, cherishes the treasures the ocean offers, like the seashells she collects to make a necklace. Her family, from a long line of fishermen, lives by the rhythm of the waves, their livelihood dependent on the sea's bounty. Her father fishes, while her mother plays a crucial role by weaving nets, preparing meals before dawn, and scaling and drying fish for market. The story also touches upon the underlying financial struggles the family faces, as Rani overhears her parents discussing the rising rent and the possibility of moving. This looms over Rani’s idyllic life, causing her to worry about changes to her school, her home, and her beloved beach. The narrative beautifully captures the innocence of childhood, the importance of family, and the economic realities that can affect familial decisions. It highlights the sensory details of coastal living – the sound of waves, the smell of fish, and the sea breeze – creating a vivid setting for Rani’s imaginative world. The story explores themes of love for nature, familial interdependence, and the anxieties that arise from economic uncertainty.","Rani’s Seashell Necklace Raya Rahman, Shazia Omar \nSayeef Mahmud \nRani closed her eyes as the waves gently splashed her.“We’re all wet!” squealed her little sister, Asma. But Rani didn’t mind. She imagined she was a mermaid, swimming to faraway kingdoms underwater. \nWhere she found treasures! Shiny seashells that she strung together to make a necklace.“Help me tie it, Asma!” \nRani loved pretty things. Her name, meaning queen in Bangla, fit her perfectly. \nHome wasn’t too far from the beach. Rani had grown up with the sound of the waves splashing on the shore, the salty fish smell tickling her nose, and the misty sea breeze kissing her face. \nTheir father came from a long line of fishermen, so the sea was an important part of their lives. \nWhen they got home, Asma with a crown of seaweed and Rani wearing her seashell necklace, their mother greeted them with freshly fried pomfret. \n“Hurry and eat it before it gets cold,” said Ma. \nFishing was their livelihood. But Baba could not do it without Ma’s help. She was the one who wove the nets and made his meals before sunrise, so he could be out the door by first light. \nIn the evenings, she would scale the fish he caught and lay them out to dry. He would then sell the dried fish, shutki, along with fresh ones at the market every week. \nBaba sang for them at night. Folk songs that he had learned from his own father, rich with stories of the fishermen of Bangladesh. Though he tried not to show it, Rani could tell that he was worried. \nShe was only pretending to sleep when she heard her parents talk about moving.“We just can’t afford it here anymore.” Baba sounded stressed.“The rent has gone up too much!” \nIt was hard to focus the next day. Rani’s mind raced. Where were they moving to? Would she change schools? Could she still play at the beach?","cbCaijxHuVqTFp8M","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijxHuVqTFp8M","pdf",6744663,5,29,"English","en",105,"# Rani’s Seashell Necklace\n## A Life by the Sea\n## Family Livelihood\n## Financial Worries","[{\"question\":\"What does Rani's name mean?\",\"answer\":\"Rani's name means queen in Bangla.\"},{\"question\":\"What activities does Rani's family have tied to the sea?\",\"answer\":\"Rani's father is a fisherman, and her mother helps by weaving nets and preparing fish.
