roundhouse is a repair shop for the maintenanceof locomotives in service. As such its efficiencydepends upon the facility, with which locomotivesmay be received, turned, repaired and dispatched withminimum detention.A number of variable conditionsaffect the movements of locomotives at a terminal andfor this reason a consideration of the roundhouse shouldinclude the general layout of the auxiliaries in the yardtributary to the roundhouse. \nRoundhouses and engine terminal yards now in serviceon American railways represent many different degreesof development. It is a matter of very common knowl-edge that as a general thing engine house and terminalfacilities have not kept pace with locomotive developmentand growth. At the same time, however,a number ofterminal plants have been placed in commission withinrecent years which include roundhouses of excellentdesign, containing the best and most complete equipmentand yard facilities arranged to move locomotives with.quickness and precision. \nThe variable conditions affecting the arrangement oflocomotive terminals and the difference of opinion amongofficers and designers, have produced types of round-house buildings and arrangements of terminal yards, thatare very unlike in point of detail. In the main, the differ-ent designs and arrangements follow certain generalprinciples;but beyond these, individual ideas have beenfollowed to such an extent that it is impractical to at-tempt to outline a precedent according to which round-houses have been designed and terminal yards have beenarranged. At the end of this chapter a number of plansare presented which have been selected as representativeof existing practice.Ideas of detail may be gathered tobetter advantage by referring to the individual drawingsrather than by following extensive descriptive matter, and for this reason the text of this chapter is devotedprincipally to general features representative of practiceswhich have been used successfully. \nLAYOUT. \nLocomotive terminals are either in connection withmain or division shops,or constitute isolated plants inclose proximity to a large terminal yard or passengerstation.Where the roundhouse forms a part of a shopplant, its location is naturally as near as possible to thepoint at which locomotives are needed for road work. The presence of a roundhouse at a shop plant frequentlyinfluences the entire arrangement of the shop buildingsand equipment. The layout of the shops is sometimesrestricted by locating some of the buildings to serve theinterestsof theroundhouse, insteadofarranging them \n# Railway Shop Up To Date\n\n## Chapter XI.\n\nROUNDHOUSE \nin locations which advance the most economical and pro-ductive movement of material. \nThe roundhouse is commonly in close proximity to thelocomotive shop where the delivery of wheels and otherparts requiring machine work will be over the shortestroute. It is also essential to provide easy access from theboiler and blacksmith shops. \nIn recent years several main shops have been builtfrom which the roundhouse has been excluded. In someof these instances the roundhouse is near the shop plant, but is in no way a component part of it.Where thiscondition prevails a small shop plant is built in connec-tion with the roundhouse to supply its immediate needsand the main shop is not called on to do roundhousework, except on driving wheels or on emergency repairswhich are too large for the roundhouse shop equipment. At some isolated roundhouses driving wheel lathes areincluded in the machine tool equipment. \nWith the development of freight terminal yards anumber of isolated roundhouses have been built in closeproximity to the yards to provide improved enginehandling facilities near the points where the engines arerequired for service, thereby reducing the delay whichfrequently occurs between engine house and train,a fea-ture of no small moment where a large number of enginesare turned in 24 hours.A practice now becoming moreand more common is to locate a roundhouse, with itsn","cbCaiuOIJxjNyc0O","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuOIJxjNyc0O","pdf",7697143,38,"English","# Layout\n## Roundhouse integration with shops\n##
