The game requires two to three players to strategically place counters on a hexagonal grid, aiming to create an unbroken path from Earth to the Moon. By combining quick mental math recall with tactical blocking maneuvers, participants develop both numerical fluency and strategic thinking abilities. Players work to solve subtraction problems found on the grid, with their opponents verifying the results to ensure accuracy. The game supports flexible learning through variations, such as allowing opponents to remove counters when a mistake is made, thereby increasing the competitive challenge and encouraging careful calculation. This resource provides a dynamic, interactive way to practice core arithmetic, making the process of mastering subtraction both enjoyable and highly effective for young learners in a classroom or home setting.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":20,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/race-to-the-moon-subtracting-to-20-educational-math-game/631848/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/race-to-the-moon-subtracting-to-20-educational-math-game/631848.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Ivy","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-31","2026-10-22",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":34},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What is the goal of the Race to the Moon game?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"The goal is to be the first player to create an unbroken path of counters from the Earth to the Moon on the hexagonal game board.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How many players are required for this game?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"The game is designed for 2 or 3 players.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"What should happen if a player provides an incorrect answer to a subtraction problem?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"If a player is wrong, they do not get to place a counter. As well as developing quick recall of number facts, this game also involves strategy in blocking your partner whilst making your path. \nAge range: 2nd Grade + \nNumber of players: 2 or 3 \nLearning: Subtract with numbers to 20, strategy You will need \n- Each player will need about 20 counters of their own color. \nInstructions \n• Choose a subtraction you want to work out on one of the uncovered hexagons on the game board. \n• Work out the answer in your head. You can use the number line to help you. \n• Say the calculation and the answer. \n• Your partner will check in their head (or using the number line) . \n• If you are right, you place a counter on the hexagon. Then it is your partner’s turn. If you are wrong, you don’t get to place a counter. \n• The winner is the first person to complete an unbroken path of counters from the Earth to the Moon (path can go across, down, diagonally) . See below. \nVariations \n• If you get an answer wrong, your partner can remove one of your counters from the board. \nExamples of winning paths.","cbCailYwrxFMtLgf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailYwrxFMtLgf","pdf",231746,"English","# Race to the Moon: Subtracting to 20\n## Game Overview\n## Instructions for Play\n## Learning Objectives\n## Game Variations","[{\"question\":\"What is the goal of the Race to the Moon game?\",\"answer\":\"The goal is to be the first player to create an unbroken path of counters from the Earth to the Moon on the hexagonal game board.\"},{\"question\":\"How many players are required for this game?\",\"answer\":\"The game is designed for 2 or 3 players.\"},{\"question\":\"What should happen if a player provides an incorrect answer to a subtraction problem?\",\"answer\":\"If a player is wrong, they do not get to place a counter.
