PDFs are typically used to distribute read-only documents that preserve the layout of a page. When you go into Google Drive and open a PDF file, it will most likely open using the standard PDF Reader. This will mean that you can view the file, but you are not able to add annotations, drawings, highlights or comments onto the document. However, by opening the file using Adobe, you can do this for free, which can be especially useful when filling in a worksheet/forms. Adobe can be set up to be your default PDF reader in Google Drive. \n1. Download the following app from the Google Workspace Marketplace: \nAdobe Acrobat: PDF edit, convert, sign tools . If this is blocked by admin (the school), then you will need to contact the ICT department to get this approved. \n2. Go to your Google Drive. If accessing from a Chrome web browser (rather than the app on a Chromebook), you may find it useful to add this page to your ‘ Bookmarks Bar’. \n3. Click on the cog button, and then ‘Settings’. \n4. Within Settings, click on ‘Manage apps’ on the left-hand side. Here you should see Adobe listed (if successful installed) . \n5. Tick the box where is says ‘Use by default’ \n6. Each time you open a PDF through your Google Drive, it will now open using Adobe. The first time, you may need to click through a few screens to ensure you are logged in correctly, but after that it will happen automatically. \n7. Use the Adobe tools of the left-hand side to ‘mark-up’ your PDF document. This includes the following: \nUnder the tool with the letter ‘A’(as pictured), you can choose to either add text, a cross, tick, dot or circle. \nThe size of any of these can be changed by clicking on the small and large ‘A’ buttons that appear \nwhen you place the object. The colour can also be changed in the toolbar. \nTo draw and write onto the PDF, in a more free-flow manner, click on the tool with a wiggly line (as pictured) . Under this tool, you also have the choice to draw arrows \nand other shapes. The colour and line thickness can also be changed in the toolbar. \nTo highlight text, click on the ‘highlighter pen’ icon on the left toolbar (as pictured), and drag the cursor over the text. If you click on the highlighted text itself, options will appear to \nchange the colour and add a comment. Alternatively, the colour can be changed in the toolbar on the left-hand side of the page. \nWithin this tool button, you also have the option to underline or strikethrough text, which works in the same way as highlighting. \nTo add a comment that sits off the page itself, click on the ‘speech \nbubble’ icon in the toolbar on the left of the page (as pictured) . Click on the page where you want the comment to be and type your comment panel that appears on the right-hand side. \nPlease note: Adobe is just one PDF Reader app, which we widely recommend. However, there are alternatives that also allow you to ‘mark-up’ PDF documents, and may already be pre-approved and widely used in some schools. These include Kami and Lumin PDF.","cbCaij2yjR1jUf99","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaij2yjR1jUf99","pdf",474796,"English","# Installation and setup\n## Set Adobe as default in Google Drive\n# Marking up PDFs with Adobe\n## Add text, shapes, and free-form drawings\n## Highlight, underline, and strikethrough\n## Add comments and annotations","[{\"question\":\"Why use Adobe instead of the standard Google Drive PDF viewer?\",\"answer\":\"Google Drive’s built-in PDF reader lets you view documents but not easily add annotations, drawings, highlights, or comments.
