AND IT WAS ALL MY FAULT. \nI stood at the edge of the forest, wondering if coming here was another mistake. \nBoots tugged at my dress, a sign he was bored and ready to move on. I didn’t blame him. I had been standing in the same spot, contemplating my next move, for quite a while. \n“Fine. Let’s go,” I said, gently nudging him off my clothing. \nHe shook his head, knocking my arm, and I scratched behind his ear while I gazed at my surroundings. \nGrandfather’s log cabin sent a wave of memories through me. \nThankfully, my grandfather’s farm was outside the village on the outskirts of the forest. There were no nearby neighbors to see me approach. No one to spy on us and alert the temple that the child of prophecy had returned home. \nChickens busied around the front yard, searching for worms, and the corral near the large brown two-door barn held a few familiar alpacas. It made me yearn to go back to the cottage in the valley and see if my animals were safe. \nAt some point, I would return there. I just didn’t know when. \nA fat rooster with beautiful black sickle feathers and a vibrantred comb on the top of his head waddled over to inspect us. Steering Boots away from the curious male chicken, I ushered my beloved donkey into the corral and latched the gate behind him. \n“Stay here,” I said.“And no nibbling any of the alpacas, or that ornery llama is going to get you.” \nBoots hee-hawed in response before bustling over to a group of hens. \nGrabbing the wooden fence for support, I stared at my grandfather’s porch and the two rocking chairs where we spent afternoons drinking sweet tea and creating stories about each of the farm animals. My grandmother’s orange and red mums bloomed in front of the cabin, signifying the end of another season. \nSoon it would be fall then winter. Where would I spend those cold nights? Back in Kane’s spire? Or somewhere entirely new? \nA gentle breeze whisked my hair around my shoulders, bringing a slight chill to the afternoon. The sky was orange and pink, and if I spent any more time out here reminiscing about the past, it would be nightfall. \nThis was the right choice. At least, that’s what I truly believed. \nHow could Kane possibly deal with his mortality when the cause of it","cbCaiaZTwjT71HFC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaZTwjT71HFC","pdf",3845769,7,241,"English","en",105,"# Chapter 1 -
