She was just too early for effective treatment. In her short life, Mrosovsky published two books, one of which, her annotated translation of Flaubert’s The Temptation of St Anthony (1980), became a Penguin Classic, the other a novel, Hydra (1985) . She was a beautiful woman who inspired enduring love, passionate friendship and bad poetry, but she can now also be seen as an acute and independent chronicler of an extraordinary time. \nHer third book, Quake, never published while Mrosovsky was alive, is witty, illuminating and replete with life, an extraordinary one-off performance to savour before the theatre goes dark. It will be read today ina very different world from the one in which she wrote. The all-male posse, including Martin Amis, who called themselves ‘Martians’ in the hope that linguistic extravagance would make readers see the world afresh, no longer monopolise the British literary stage. \nQuake is sometimes alight with metaphors that have touches of that same strangeness, but they grow organically from the narrative, and its scrupulous prose is often brief and clear. The central figure, Olivia, teaches English as a foreign language in London for money, meditates on art and a lost brother, but lives for her Italian lover, Rosario, and a delectable cat, Saffron. Both adored beings visit Olivia when they feel like it, but belong to someone else. \nFor us now, Olivia is an emblematic figure as well as a tender, tragicomic character. She is an intelligent, independent woman who loves sex and lives in that brief late twentieth-century window of freedom when there was easily available contraception and little fear of sexually transmitted \ninfection. That window closed with the arrival of HIV, followed by the twenty-first century’s linguistic purifiers and puritans. For Olivia and her author there are no taboos: sex is an absolute good, described in epicurean detail as if it is delicious food for the hungry. The banquet includes every kind of sex act. Joy, and in particular the joy of the lover, is the only guiding principle. \nBorn in England but following her family around the world for her education, Mrosovsky was one of three daughters of Peter Mrosovsky, a Cambridge friend of great Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov.‘P.M.’ has a youthful cameo in Nabokov’s memoir Speak, Memory (1951), bringing back from Paris a smuggled copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses. He is also thought to have inspired the character Darwin in Nabokov’s novel Glory (1932) . When Kitty was sixteen, she discovered her father was in fact the illegitimate son of the world-famous Italian opera-singer Mattia Battistini, which perhaps deepened her love of Italy. In her late teens Mrosovsky won a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford, to read English. I did the same two years later, and we became friends as graduates. \nWhen I first met her, she seemed set for conventional success. She had been President of the Junior Common Room at Somerville, got a first-class honours degree, took her BPhil, which at the time was the path to an academic career, and won a sought-after post as an English lecturer at York University. But intellectual doubts about the value of teaching began almost at once, and were later fictionalised in lace","cbCaiipwp9mhxHnr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiipwp9mhxHnr","pdf",4046296,7,1,259,"English","en",105,"# Foreword\n## Mrosovsky’s life and final work\n## Quake’s narrative focus and central characters\n## Themes: freedom, sex, taboo, and change","[{\"question\":\"Quake是什么背景下完成与出版的？ ,"https://schema.org",{"og:url":52,"og:type":88,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":59,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":90,"canonical":52},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":25},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":93},[94,98,101,105,110,115,119,124,129,132,136],{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":95,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":97},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":99,"slug":100},80,"literature",{"id":53,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":102,"show_sort_weight":103,"slug":104},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":106,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":107,"show_sort_weight":108,"slug":109},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":111,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":112,"show_sort_weight":113,"slug":114},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
