QMHAs obtain registra􀆟on and cer􀆟ﬁca􀆟on through MHACBO, the Mental Health and Addic􀆟on Cer􀆟ﬁca􀆟on Board of Oregon.  \nWhat do QMHAs do?  \nQualiﬁed Mental Health Associates (QMHAs) communicate with clients receiving mental health services, assist in gathering informa􀆟on for mental health evalua􀆟ons, support and assist clients in reaching  \ngoals on their mental health treatment plan. QMHAs orient clients to mental services, help to keep clients engaged in services, assist them in overcoming barriers to par􀆟cipa􀆟on. QMHAs monitor client progress towards their treatment goals and report back to mental health professionals. QMHAs instruct clients on various living skills, assist clients in accessing community resources, and implement interven􀆟ons on the client’s treatment plan. QMHAs do safety assessments/checks, evaluate the safety of clients and the safety of the environments in which they live. QMHAs also assist clients in care coordina􀆟on with other healthcare providers (prescribers, primary care, dental care, etc. ) .  \nQMHA-I: Basic Cer􀆟ﬁca􀆟on  \nQMHA  \nbecome a QMHA?  \nQMHA-R: Ini􀆟al Registra􀆟on  \nStep One  \nA bachelors degree in behavioral science, or a combina􀆟on of three years of educa􀆟on and relevant behavioral health occupa􀆟onal experience.  \nObtain an ini􀆟al competency assessment from a qualiﬁed supervisor at a state cer􀆟ﬁed mental health agency. (This assessment is typically based on information gathered from the employment interview, and the applicant’s occupational history, and education.)  \nTo become a QMHA, you ﬁrst “Register”(QMHA-R) mee􀆟ng the minimum qualiﬁca􀆟ons that allow you to begin working with mental health clients. Registra􀆟on is valid for a period of two years. During that two years you must earn 1,000 clinical experience hours within a state cer􀆟ﬁed mental health agency.  \nThe basic requirements to become registered (QMHA-R), include:  \nStep Two   \nSubmit documenta􀆟on of 1,000 Supervised Clinical Experience Hours, veriﬁed by a qualiﬁed supervisor in a state approved mental health program.  \nYour supervisor must complete an advanced competency assessment, a􀆩es􀆟ng to your abili􀆟es.  \nSuccessfully pass the QMHA-I Exam, a professional na􀆟onal psychometric exam covering the QMHA competencies.  \nHow do I  \nPrior to the expira􀆟on of your ini􀆟al registra􀆟on, you must obtain cer􀆟ﬁca􀆟on as a QMHA-I.
