From environmental law to corporate law to sports law, there really is something for everyone! \nLaw is a competitive industry and this is seen from entry level as pupils apply for university. It is important you consider the route to qualification and your career options early in your legal journey. \nLaw as an undergraduate degree can open great opportunities across a range of industries, not just being a solicitor. It is a degree which is respected across many professions covering a host of different industries. \nWhile law covers lots of areas, there are some common skills which you might need to be a solicitor. If any of these skills stand out to you, maybe law is something for you to consider! \nSkills a solicitor has: \n• Good communicator, both verbally and written \n• Interpersonal skills, enjoys working alongside others \n• Collaboration and working within a team \n• Excellent analytical skills \n• High attention to detail \n• Ability to work to deadlines \nPupil and Teacher Handbook | 3 \nRoute to qualification \nIn order to become a fully qualified solicitor in Scotland there is a route to qualification that you must complete. The majority of students take the‘standard route’ to qualification, which is most suited to those attending university for the first time. \nStandard route to qualification \nLLB in Scots Law \nThe LLB takes the form of a 4-year undergraduate course in Scots Law. \nDiploma in Professional Legal Practice (PEAT 1) \nThe Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is a post graduate qualification that takes 1 year to complete full time at university. \nTraineeship (PEAT 2) \nThe Traineeship is a 2-year paid job where you train under the supervision of a Scottish qualified solicitor. \nQualified as a Scottish solicitor \nAfter completing the route to qualification you can practise law in Scotland. \nOnce you have completed the necessary steps, you will be a fully qualified solicitor able to practise in Scotland. There is more information on the route(s) to qualification on our website.
