Graphic narratives, or comics, are a popular and sophisticated literary form, but their potential for public engagement with complex and difficult history was overlooked until very recently. Due to their immediate production and ease of accessibility, online graphic narratives, or ‘webcomics’, could become as important in democratizing the production and interpretation of history as pop-up exhibitions, video games, GIS mapping, and other formats which public historians have embraced. \nThis paper discusses the results of a pilot project in which two different publics gave feedback on a short webcomic based on the minutes of an 1866 Limerick Harbour Board meeting involving the mayor, Peter Tait, and Richard Russell, a combative member of an influential local bourgeois family. The webcomic was hosted on Dropbox and on a popular webcomic-hosting site, ComicFury. Respondents were sought from a Limerick-based general public via poster advertising and a post on a forum centred around Limerick City, where the comic is set. Respondents with a deeper familiarity with webcomics were sought via posts on the ComicFury forums. Each public answered a survey tailored to its specific context. \nThis paper will discuss the process of creating the webcomic and surveys and the feedback received from both publics, and will situate this work in the theory of comics and their applications for history. It will analyze the reception of an obscure historical incident in comic form and suggest how the survey answers can be used to construct along-form webcomic intended both to disseminate scholarship and involve nonacademics as partners in the production of scholarship. It will examine the demographics who participated in the survey, their day-to-day consumption of history, and the positive and negative criticism they gave regarding the webcomic. Finally, it will illuminate how the lessons learned from this project will be applied in the creation of a webcomic specifically designed for use in public history as part of a PhD thesis. \nRachel Beck is a history PhD candidate at the University of Limerick in the Republic of Ireland. As a result of the structural change of the maritime economy, part of the former port and shipyard facilities were completely transformed into tourist and public recreational areas. During the economic boom of the fish industry, more than 30 cultural, documentary or industrial films dealing with the fish industry were produced.
