The outcome of Standing Bear versus Crook was a monumental moment for Indigenous people everywhere. The ruling indicated that Native Americans had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This decision created a legacy that has impacted past, present, and future generations. \nIt took courage for Standing Bear to leave Indian Territory and make the long walk back to Nebraska to lay his son to rest. Without this act of courage and respect for the Ponca way of life, this legacy would not have been formed. \nAs we take time this May to celebrate the anniversary of this important moment, I challenge the Ponca people to do one act, big or small, to carry Standing Bear’s legacy forward. Tell your friend about your Ponca heritage. Try saying a new word in Ponca. Reach out to an elder and ask them to tell you a story. Learn about your family tree and which great Ponca leaders came before you. These acts keep Ponca culture alive today and not just in memory. \nA legacy isn’t something we just inherit; a legacy is a call-to-action.
