Psych \nAssistant Professor \n[sdubois@uwo.ca](sdubois@uwo.ca) \nDr. Adam T. Newton, PhD Assistant Professor \n[anewton9@uwo.ca](anewton9@uwo.ca) \nOffice Hours: \nTime of Classes \nLocation of Classes \nBy appointment \nThursdays 9AM to 12PM OR \nThursdays 5PM to 8PM \nWH 20F \nCourse Description \nThe goal of this class is to introduce the major principles of, and approaches to, psychological assessment. We will focus on the areas of psychopathology, personality, and intellectual functioning. The course is designed to familiarize students with the scientific bases of rigorous psychological assessment and evaluation and promote critical thinking about assessment practice across the lifespan. To this end, the course will highlight the conceptual processes underlying sound assessment, measurement development, as well as the strengths and limitations of current assessment and evaluation procedures. The companion practicum (9901; restricted to clinical stream graduate students) is designed to give students the fundamental applied skills and \nknowledge needed to administer common psychological assessments. Psychol 9900 has a conceptual focus, grounded in empirical evidence, whereas the practicum is applied, with the goal of providing students with fundamental skills in clinical assessment. Class size is limited to 15 students. In the case that student demand exceeds course capacity, enrolment preference will be given to clinical stream graduate students. \nCourse Format \nThis course will be delivered in-person, face-to-face. \nCourse Learning Outcomes/Objectives \nThe course is designed to provide clinical psychology students with the basic theoretical, professional, and ethical knowledge and practical experience in psychological assessment. The course will include information necessary to critically evaluate various assessment instruments as well as the practical“how-to” of assessment. \nDuring both terms of this course, students will be introduced to professional, ethical, and practical issues in psychological assessment. This includes a focus on the development of skills involved in the administering and scoring of various psychological tests assessing intelligence, personality and other clinically important factors. \nCourse Materials \nTextbooks \n1. There is a lot of material and some of it will be difficult. However, the readings are the most important part of the course. It is essential that you take the time to absorb the material so that you are prepared to discuss assigned readings every week. Since the readings are unevenly distributed throughout the course, we recommend keeping an eye on what is coming up and reading ahead for the heavier weeks. All readings will be provided to you via OWL Brightspace. \nMethods of Evaluation \n\n| Evaluation | Dates/Deadlines | Grading Weight","cbCailuezwbeuS6N","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailuezwbeuS6N","pdf",248749,"English","# Course Information\n## Instructors and Office Hours\n## Course Description\n## Course Format\n## Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives\n## Course Materials\n## Methods of Evaluation\n## Participation\n## Essay on a Current Issue in Psychological Assessment\n## Essay Presentation\n## Oral Exam\n## Written Take Home Exam","[{\"question\":\"What is the main goal of Psychology 9900: Assessment - Theory and Practice?\",\"answer\":\"The course introduces major principles and approaches to psychological assessment, focusing on psychopathology, personality, and intellectual functioning, and developing critical thinking about assessment practice across the lifespan.\"},{\"question\":\"What course format and class constraints are stated?\",\"answer\":\"The course is delivered in-person, face-to-face, with a class size limited to 15 students and enrollment preference given to clinical stream graduate students if demand exceeds capacity.\"},{\"question\":\"How is student performance evaluated?\",\"answer\":\"Evaluation includes participation (10%), demonstrated competency in WAIS or WISC (5%), an essay (20%), essay presentation (20%), an oral exam (20%), and a written take-home exam (25%).\"}]","Psychology 9900 Assessment - Theory and Practice - Fall & Winter 2025-2026 | PDF",1790766229,25]
