This study tested whether protein intake/body weight and physical activity mediated the association between sleep quality and handgrip strength in persons aged 60+ years using the HANDLS study (2013–2017). Sleep was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and handgrip was assessed with a Jamar dynamometer. Mediation was evaluated with Hayes PROCESS macro (SPSS). After excluding participants with sleep apnea (n=138), results showed protein intake, but not physical activity, significantly shaped handgrip strength (p=0.002) and mediated the relationship (R2=0.47), supporting protein’s role in maintaining muscle strength via sleep quality.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":35,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/protein-intake-mediates-the-relationship-of-sleep-quality-with-handgrip-strength-in-older-persons-60-years-abstract/427587/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/protein-intake-mediates-the-relationship-of-sleep-quality-with-handgrip-strength-in-older-persons-60-years-abstract/427587.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Margaret","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-19","2026-09-29",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":24},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What was the study trying to determine?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"The study aimed to test whether protein intake/body weight and physical activity mediated the relationship between sleep quality and handgrip strength in adults aged 60+ years.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How were sleep quality and handgrip strength measured?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire, and handgrip strength was measured with a Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"What did the mediation analysis show about protein and physical activity?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"Protein intake significantly influenced handgrip strength and mediated the sleep quality–handgrip relationship, while physical activity did not show this effect.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},427587,1790729977,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":34,"category_name":35,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":24,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":14,"language":139,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":140,"faqs":141,"seo_title":142,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":143,"read_time":24},137451207643,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_3d24733baf745e90a7e4bdd5f77d97b2","Innovation in Aging, 2025, Vol. 9, No. S2 715 \nAbstract citation ID: igaf122.2437 \nPROTEIN INTAKE MEDIATES THE RELATIONSHIP OF SLEEP QUALITY WITH HANDGRIP STRENGTH IN OLDER PERSONS 60+ YEARS \nMarie Fanelli Kuczmarski1, Elizabeth Orsega-Smith1, May Beydoun2, Michele Evans2, and Alan Zonderman2, \n1. The study objective was to determine if protein intake/body weight (gm/kg) and engagement in physical activity mediated the relationship between sleep with handgrip strength in persons ≥ 60 years examined in the HANDLS study, 2013-2017. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. Handgrip strength was measured with Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer and expressed per Body Mass Index (based on measured height and weight) . \nProtein intake was calculated from 2-24-hour recalls collected with the USDA Automated Multiple-Pass Method. Physical activity was self-reported and expressed as meeting the Life Simple 7 criterion (≥150 mins/week, 0-149 mins/week, 0 mins/wk) . \nMediation analysis used Hayes PROCESS macro, model \\#4, for SPSS Version 4.2. Before performing the analysis,138 individuals with sleep apnea were excluded, resulting in an analytical sample of 1308. Covariates that were adjusted for in models included: \nage (years), sex at birth (male, female), self-reported race (African American, White), poverty status (\u003C 125% or > 125% U.S. HHS Poverty Guidelines), current cigarette smoker (yes, no), marijuana, opiate and/or cocaine user (yes, no), medical conditions of diabetes, hypertension, and/or metabolic syndrome (yes, no), and mean energy(kcal). Protein intake, but not physical activity, significantly influenced handgrip strength (p = 0.002) and mediated the relationship of sleep quality with handgrip (R2 = 0.47) . \nResults suggest that protein is critical to preserving muscle strength and plays a role in sleep quality.","cbCaiu6uByT7I7cf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiu6uByT7I7cf","pdf",1278443,"English","# Abstract\n## Study objective and design\n## Measurements and variables\n## Mediation analysis method\n## Covariates and results\n## Conclusions","[{\"question\":\"What was the study trying to determine?\",\"answer\":\"The study aimed to test whether protein intake/body weight and physical activity mediated the relationship between sleep quality and handgrip strength in adults aged 60+ years.\"},{\"question\":\"How were sleep quality and handgrip strength measured?\",\"answer\":\"Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire, and handgrip strength was measured with a Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer.\"},{\"question\":\"What did the mediation analysis show about protein and physical activity?\",\"answer\":\"Protein intake significantly influenced handgrip strength and mediated the sleep quality–handgrip relationship, while physical activity did not show this effect.\"}]","PROTEIN INTAKE MEDIATES THE RELATIONSHIP OF SLEEP QUALITY WITH HANDGRIP STRENGTH IN OLDER PERSONS 60+ YEARS - Abstract | PDF",1790644284]
