Prophetic Quakerism\n\nLewis Benson \nFirst Printing 1943 \n(Under the Title“The Resettlement of Prophetic Quakerism”)Second Printing 1944 \nYanway16,(9g \nACH generation faces a new world and must reviseits inherited knowledge in order to cope with chang-ing conditions. This universal truth has its counter-part in the life of the church but to conform to the experi-ence of the church it needs to be qualified. The churchmust continually adjust to a changing environment but if itis to survive it must never fail to maintain its adjustmentto its changeless point of reference. There are times whenthe church can do this with very little strain on the existingfabric. At other times this twofold adjustment can onlybe achieved by tearing and rending the whole structureand slowly rebuilding from the foundations. \nThe Society of Friends had its birth at a time when thechurch was being shaken to its foundations and the inten-tion of the Quaker founders was nothing less than to startwith the foundation and rebuild from the ground up.In ourtime the church is again facing a major crisis. This crisishas resulted from the church's failure to remain firmlygrounded on Truth while striving to adjust to a rapidlychanging world. Now that evil forces are sweeping over theearth the church finds it difficult to prove that she is reallyable to prevail against the gates of hell.In her extremitythe church is going back to her sources in search of renewedstrength. The Protestants are going back to the originalReformers and the Catholics to St.Thomas.The church hasbecome increasingly aware of what her work is in the worldand is seeking for strength to maintain her witness in theanti-Christian world order that seems to be imminent.Nevertheless, there remains a wide gulf between what thechurch knows she should be and what,in fact, she is. \nThe cause of this is to be found in the limitations thatare inherent in both Protestantism and Catholicism.Cathol- \nicism places the ground of authority in the church as anhistorical continuum with a visible head.Protestantismtends to view the Bible as the final word of authority.TheQuakers went directly to the guiding light of the livingChrist for their authority. They believed that they hadrediscovered the only adequate foundation for Christiantruth and, building on this foundation, they were enabledto carry forward to successful demonstration the pattern ofChristian community which had been proclaimed and exhib-ited by the early church. The early Quakers possessed thevery things that are now so eagerly sought after byProtestants.Let us examine some of these qualifications ofthe true church which were so abundantly present in theearly Quaker fellowship. \nFirst,was the conviction that knowledge of God's will, sufficient for man's needs,is actually accessible to all men.At the present time neither Liberal nor Orthodox Protest-antism has an adequate doctrine of how the will of Godbecomes effectively active in the life of the church. In ourday we have seen both Liberal and Orthodox unite in theprayer—“Let the church be the church.”—but the churchstill remains unable to offer the possibility of participationin the Christ-ruled community that is independent of allworldly power. \nThis is the dilemma of Protestantism;it knows that itshould be a community separate from the world and gath-ered and sustained by the word addressed to it by God andyet it is unable to offer the possibility of participation insuch a community. \nThe quest for a church against which the gates of hellcannot prevail leads directly to the door of primitiveQuakerism. Here we are given a demonstration of theChrist-ruled community that the modern church essays tobe. What all good Christians aspire to be but despair ofbecoming, the Quaker affirmed was a real possibility andcrowned his affirmation with convincing demonstration. \nAre Quakers still affirming this possibility of Christianperfection? Are they
