The action triggers wide public debate and mobilizes media and social movements, including responses that physically target turnstiles. The booklet details the device’s “exterior anatomy,” explaining how permission, visibility signals, and counter-based recording operate as biopolitical control, then contrasts it with the body force required to make turnstiles move. It also presents related public assembly events and documented monuments.","PROGRAM FOR THE DE-TURNSTILIZATION OF LIFE ITSELF  \nGRUPO CONTRAFILÉ São Paulo, 2004  \nIntroduction  \nThe Programa Para Descatracalização da Própria Vida (Program for the  \nDe-turnstilization of Life Itself), created by the Grupo Contrafilé in 2004, was an urban intervention that brought to light the invisible mechanisms of control in urban life. To achieve this, the collective installed a turnstile on a pedestal in Largo do Arouche, São Paulo, accompanied by a sign that read: “Monument to the Invisible Turnstile – Program to Unturnstile Your Own Life.”  \nThe action sparked an intense national debate, mobilizing the media and bringing the collective closer to various social movements, such as the student’s movement and the free public transport movement (Movimento Passe Livre). In response to this debate, students set fire to turnstiles in the streets and in front of universities, exposing the contradictions of the devices that regulate access to the city and laying bare the oppressive logic of these control mechanisms.  \nAs Australian artist and curator Zanny Beg observed when reflecting on Contrafilé’s project: “This work highlights the potential of artists to find visual symbols which can speak to complex social and political issues (it even created a new word to explain this reality: unturnstile).”  \n01  \nPROGRAM FOR THE DE-TURNSTILIZATION OF LIFE ITSELF  \nTURNSTILE’S EXTERIOR ANATOMY  \n1. The revolving arm is the key element. It has a personalizing feature: its width allows only one person to pass through at a time; as a one-way device, the passage turns out irreversible.  \n2. Passage permission is certified by an Optical/ Magnetic Mechanism. In any case, the purchasing power of the passerby and/or their acceptability by the vigilance system are controlled.  \n3. A Green/Red light establishes the communication between turnstile and passerby. When green, it suggests that passage is allowed; when red, it indicates the passage is denied.  \n4. Counter is a biopolitical control element. It records the passerby flow and is used by Vigilance Technical and Marketing Teams to verify the system function.  \nHUMAN ENERGY SPENT  \nTurnstiles do not rotate on their own; they require our daily engagement and move using our body force.  \nExemplary situation:  \nAbout 1.763.587 people pass by the 718 barriers of São Paulo subway system every day, considering the number of entrances and exits exclusively;  \nAbout 4.300.000 passengers pass through the  \n13.661 São Paulo bus turnstiles on a daily basis;  \n7.827.174 is the minimum number of giraffe turnstiles every day in São Paulo’s buses and subway lines.  \n* Data of 2004  \n02  \nSight Public Assembly (Assembleia Pública de Olhares), held in Itaquera, a district of São Paulo’s East Region, where local political and cultural leaders debated on the many spatial and social segregation forms in the city. During the Assembly, where the turnstile was an important symbol to spark group discussions, participants proposed considering an intervention in the city. That is how the idea of creating an “Monument to the Invisible Turnstile” came up, an initiative to launch the “Program for the De-turnstilization of Life Itself.”  \nSight Public Assembly fem noun. 1 People gathering aiming to share what paralyzes or motivates them; intimate gathering; 2 Collective effort to formulate questions and exercise to name urgencies; a learning space; 3 Collective active listening practice which leads to the creation of content and/or symbols resulting from the recognition of a shared experience; 4 Time and place invention for dissent; affirmation of singularities that cocreate realities; 5 Inner mobility; 6 Availability to relate in completeness; 7 Disconditioning from repeated patterns; change of habits; 8 Movement to untie social knots planned by the Confining State; space for forbidden relations; 9 Overt creation state.  \n03  \nPicture from the installation of the Monument to the Invisible Turnstile, by Contrafilé Gr","cbCaiuA7db92hCyn","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuA7db92hCyn","pdf",7193905,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Program purpose and public debate\n# Turnstile’s Exterior Anatomy\n## Revolving arm and passage permission\n## Optical/Magnetic mechanism and light signals\n## Counter, vigilance, and marketing verification\n# Human Energy Spent\n## Daily movement and estimated flows (2004 data)\n# Sight Public Assembly (Assembleia Pública de Olhares)\n## Spatial and social segregation discussions\n# Monument Documentation (June 2004)\n## Installation and monument descriptions\n# Neglected Patrimony\n## Rusty device origin and prior bust placement\n# Tietê Pirates - Laerte\n## Removal and press excerpts\n# Unturnstiling\n## Authorship, presentation, and positioning\n## Sesc statement and city hall response","[{\"question\":\"What was the Program for the De-turnstilization of Life Itself intended to reveal?\",\"answer\":\"It aimed to bring to light invisible mechanisms of control in urban life, using an installed turnstile as a visual symbol to expose contradictions in how access to the city is regulated.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the booklet describe the turnstile’s “exterior anatomy”?\",\"answer\":\"It explains the revolving arm as a one-person, irreversible passage element, the Optical/Magnetic mechanism for certifying permission, a green/red light system for allowed or denied passage, and a counter that records flow for verification by technical and marketing teams.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does the booklet argue that turnstiles require human energy?\",\"answer\":\"Because turnstiles do not rotate on their own;
