from division. The intelligence quotient wascalculated from the first IQ tests by dividing someone's\"mental age\"by their chronological age.A child who had achronological age of 10 and who scored the same as an average12-year old had an IQ of 12 divided by 10,or 120(multiply by \n10).Similarly,a child with a chronological age of 8 who scoredaverage for an 8-year old had an IQ of 8 divided by 8 or 100.This system was later dropped in favor of statistical calcula-tions where the average score on an IQ test was set as 100.Thename of the score is still called IQ even though it is not cal-culated from division of mental and chronological ages. \nIQ tests are supposed to measure a person's ability to learn. However,to do this the IQ test actually measures what aperson has learned in the past. The idea is that if two peopleare exposed to the same experiences and one person learnsmore, that person is more intelligent. The flaw in this conceptis that individuals are not likely to be exposed to the same ex-periences,especially if they come from different cultures orsocial backgrounds. However,IQ tests do work as crudemeasures of a person's learning ability. \n# WHAT DO TESTS SUCH AS THE SATMEASURE?\n\nMany of the same types of questions that appear on IQ testsalso appear on aptitude tests such as the Scholastic AptitudeTest (SAT).IQ tests and aptitude tests measure many of thesame things. The big difference between these two types oftests is the use to which each is put.The SAT is used as a pre-dictor of how well a high school student is going to do incollege. The test is designed specifically for this purpose.Evidence shows that the combination of grades,SAT scores,College Board Achievement Test scores and recommendationshas proved to be an excellent, though not perfect, predictor ofhow well a high school student is going to do in college. \nAptitude tests are divided into two separate abilities areas:verbal and mathematical, and two separate scores are usuallyreported when the tests are processed.Typical verbal aptitudequestions are:synonyms and antonyms, analogies(word rela-tionships),sentence completions and reading comprehension.Typical math aptitude questions often involve number series.data interpretation, data comparison, story problems,elemen-t.ary algebra and elementary geometry. \n# HOW DOES IQ BUILDER HELP?\n\nMany people who have above-average intelligence do poorly onaptitude and IQ tests. One reason is that these individualshave not developed prcblem-solving skills needed to answerthe types of questions found on these tests. The test takermust be able to analyze a question, separate it into its compo-nent parts, and then test a variety of answers to find the onethat best fits the problem. The poor problem-solver does notfollow any real plan of action.Instead he or she looks for aninstant answer,or writes the first solution that comes to mind.On a multiple-choice test, the poor problem-solver usuallyjumps at the first answer that looks like it might be correct.Inshort,he or she panics and is unable to think through the prob-lem at hand. \nThe IQ Builder series helps you to develop the problem-solvingskills needed to do well on IQ and aptitude tests. Each of thecourses in the series contains a group of lessons that help youwith a specific category of questions. All of the courses willhelp you to develop your skills so you can handle even the mostcomplex questions. \n# HOW DOI BEGIN TO USE IQ BUILDER?\n\nAlways begin with the first lesson in the course even if youthink you know enough to skip
