Mustang.Pilotsswore by this sleek machine that looked right andwhose performance outshone the majority of its con-temporaries.That the basic design was fundamentallyright can be seen in how the speed increased from theprototype's 382 m.p.h.to the final models’,the P-51H,487 m.p.h.without too radical a change in outline orconstruction. \nThe story of how the Mustang was designed andconstructed in one hundred days need not be toldagain in these columns, but it is not quite the wholetruth,as the old story goes, that the Mustang wasalmost an inspiration of its designer James H.“Dutch”Kindelberger.The idea behind the Mustang designbegan, almost unintentionally, when Kindelbergerwent to Europe in 1938 for a tour of the aircraft indus-tries of Great Britain and Germany. What he saw ledhim to sketch some plans of a fighter he thought wouldbe able to better any other machine, should the UnitedStates become embroiled in the war that was imminentbetween Germany and the rest of Europe. He returnedto his home state of California, but still maintained hisoversea contacts. \nThe immortal P-51 Mustang was born two yearslater, and the most widely used variant was the P-51D.A grand total of 7,956 aircraft was constructed beforethe last machine rolled off the line. \nTheimmediate predecessor of the51D was the P-51Cof which 1,750 examples were built. The“C”was anexcellent aircraft but it lacked sufficient rearward view, and in spite of a number of them being fitted with \n(Photo:Roger Freeman) \nthe R.A.F.'s famed Malcolm cockpit canopy theU.S.A.A.F.decided that a new hood was required.Atabout this period the first Hawker Typhoons wereflyingfitted with the \"tear-drop\"transparent canopy whichafforded a 360-degree view. Two P-51B-10s were takenfrom the Inglewood production line and drasticallymodified in order to fit the Typhoon-type hoods.TheNorth American type number for this hybrid fighterwas NA-106,and in order to test the P-51D configur-ation complete with new hood both 51Bs were broughtup to 51D standards, the modifications including acut-down fuselage aft of the cockpit, the new “blown”canopy, provision for six wing-mounted 0·5 in.machine guns and 1,800 rounds of ammunition. \nThe first fully equipped P-51D appeared in the latterhalf of 1944 with all the new innovations, which wereintroduced to the production line, and the first fouraircraft, which had been built before the modificationswere introduced, were retro-fitted at a later stage. \nThe P-51D Mustang was a clean aeroplane, but it is seen herewith everything down as it completes landing 25-NA were builtat North America's Inglewood factory and 1,454P-51D-5-NT to 20-NT at Dallas.Production modelssoon began to stream into U.S.A.A.F.squadrons inthe Pacific, and it is interesting to record that the new51D was the first American fighter to take part instrikes on the Japanese homeland. When the 51Dreached Europe it was used primarily as a long-rangeinterceptor,but as resistance of the Luftwaffe de-creased they were used more and more in the ground-attack role. \nAs production increased the inevitable modificationprogramme brought further changes to the basic air-frame,one major modification being the introductionof a dorsal fin to compensate for loss of area of thecut-down rear fuselage.Tail warning radar was addedat a later stage. \n# ROYAL AIR FORCE MUSTANGS\n\nA large
