Date of Publication: December \n19,1932. \n# Designation:PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF PAPERS\n\nApplicant:Gustave Risler \nin general, impregnatea papers are used for insulatingslectric cables or other articles or devices to make themresistant to more or less elevated voltages. \nBut,the paper which is usea in this matter is composedof vegetable fibers, such as wood cr others, which containπore or less elongated cavities which are not open to thesurface, and contain substances other than cellulose. Thepaper,as it is actually used for these applications, doeschus not fulfil the requirements of physical and chemicalhomogeneity which are necessary for a good electrical in-sulator. \nOne has had the idea to correct these aisadvantagesby making the wall of these internal cavities of the fibersrupture in such a way that they are connected to the surface. To accomplish this rupturing, one had the idea of impregnat-ing the base and the core of these paper fibers with thehelp of a gas which is dissolved in a solvent and thenigorously heating this impregnated paper to a temperature二0o low for deteriorating the paper but high enough toevaporate the solvent in the shortest possible time and toliberate the gas which,as it suddenly expands in volume, exerts sufficient pressure to burst the wall of the cavitieswithin the paper fibers. \nIt is very important that the largest possible quantityof dissolved gas be absorbed by the paper fibers, and thatthe latter be brought almost instantaneously to the elevatedtemperature which is needed to evaporate the solvent and toliberate the gas almost at the same instant without deterior-ating the paper. \nOnce the paper is treated according to the invention,it can be subsequently impregnated much more completely byan insulating mass for example, because the latter will beable to penetrate into all of the cavities thus opened. \nThis was not the case to date. Moreover, one may be interest-ed in treating the paper by any of the known processes to re-move from the cavities thus opened all substances which theymay contain. \nDigitized by the Internet Archivein 2019 \nhttps://archive.org/details/processfortreatm0Orisl \nTo impregnate the base and the core of the paperfibers in this manner one could use or combine any of theknown methods: heating, high vacuum, pressure, alternatingcycles of vacuum and pressure,etc.. \nFor the gas one would preferentially use a gas whichis very soluble in the solvents;one could use,e.g.,liquidammonia,or anhydrous ammonia which is very soluble inwater,in methyl alcohol,etc.. Water at low temperaturedissolves more than a thousand times its volume. \nTo bring the impregnated paper rapidly to the desiredtemperature for an almost instantaneous evaporation of thesolvent without degrading the paper, one could use boilingliquid which will not attack the paper(furfural,tetra-chloroethane,amyl alcohol among others)with a boilingpoint of between 130°and 150C.for example. These wouldheat up the paper to a temperature sufficiently high butwithout degrading it. Similarly, one could use,as shownbelow, very rapid jets of vapor, gas, boiling liquids, allat appropriate temperatures. \nOnce the paper has been treated, one could removeby all known means the chemical substances which were usedin this treatment and which could still be present. \nOf course, one could take all measures to recoverall chemical products used, totally or in part. \nOne can treat continuous or individual sheets ofpaper, small pieces or shreds, even a paste. After treat-ment the paper can again be reduced to a paste and thendrawn into sheets of the desired thickness. \nIt should also be noted that our process can beapplied to papers destined not only fo","cbCaieHH0okz5Lfj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieHH0okz5Lfj","pdf",528370,14,"English","# Designation: PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF PAPERS\n## Impregnation and heating to rupture internal cavities\n## Subsequent insulation impregnation and cavity cleanup\n## Example reduction to practice (continuous sheets)\n## Applicability to other paper forms and non-electrical uses","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the patent process address in insulating paper?\",\"answer\":\"The paper fibers contain elongated closed cavities and substances other than cellulose, so the material lacks the physical and chemical homogeneity needed for good electrical insulation.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the process rupture the walls of internal cavities?\",\"answer\":\"It impregnates the base and core of the paper fibers with a gas dissolved in a solvent, then heats the paper to rapidly evaporate the solvent and release the gas so it expands and bursts the cavity walls.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is rapid heating and maintaining temperature important?\",\"answer\":\"The process requires the largest possible quantity of dissolved gas to be absorbed and the paper to be brought almost instantaneously to the elevated temperature, avoiding degradation while enabling near-instant gas liberation.\"}]","PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF PAPERS - Patent | PDF",35]
