Essays are graded on a seven-point quality scale by bar examiners and readers, with raw essay scores converted to scaled scores and combined with MBE, MEE, and MPT components. Phase I sets pass/fail thresholds; Phase II uses readers only for an automatic re-grading of all eight essays, including averaging when differences are limited. A team consisting of a Bar Examiner and Readers grades each essay question. A team grades only the question assigned to them. The total essay raw score is converted to a scaled score that is equated and combined with the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) score in the following manner. \nMultistate Performance Test (MPT) 20% \nMultistate Essay Examination (MEE) 30% \nMultistate Bar Examination (MBE) 50% \nPHASE I (GRADED BY BAR EXAMINERSAND READERS) \nApplicants who earn a combined total scaled score of 272 or above after Phase I have passed the examination without the need for any further review. Applicants who earn a combined total scaled score below 260 after Phase I have failed and the grading process is complete for these candidates. \nPHASE II (GRADED BY READERS ONLY) \nApplicants whose total scaled score falls between 260 and 271.9 after Phase I will enter the Phase II grading process. The Phase II procedure is automatic; candidates need not request this process. \nPhase II review includes a re-grading of all eight essays. A different Reader of the same grading team grades each essay. No Bar Examiners participate in Phase II grading. The Reader who reads the book on Phase II is not aware of the Phase I grade. Phase II grades can be higher, lower or the same as Phase I grades. \nIf the Phase II grade is the same as the Phase I grade or if the difference between the two grades does not exceed one point (higher or lower), the book is complete. Once the re-grading is complete, the Phase I and Phase II grades are averaged. \nPHASE III (GRADED BY BAR EXAMINERS ONLY) \nWhen a Phase II Reader’s decision varies two or more points from the Phase I grade, that book is read for a third time. Only Bar Examiners perform Phase III re-reads. This also is an automatic process. \nThe Bar Examiner’s Phase III grade is a “resolution” grade. It is not a mechanical averaging of the Phase I and Phase II grades. Rather, the Bar Examiner is informed of the Phase I and Phase II grades. In grading the essay, the Bar Examiner can give only a whole number grade within the range of the Phase I and Phase II grades. For example, if the Phase I grade was 2.0 and the Phase II grade was 4.0, the Bar Examiner could give a “resolution” grade of 2.0, 3.0, or 4.0. The book could not be given a grade lower than 2.0, higher than 4.0, or at a level that isnot a whole number (e.g., 2.5) . \nOn completion of Phases II and III, the applicants’ scaled scores are re-computed, averaged and rounded off to the nearest whole number. Applicants whose final overall grade is 266 and above pass the examination. Those who score below 266 fail the examination. \nThe procedures described herein constitute the sole review of individual performance on the New Jersey Bar Examination. There is no right to appeal individual essay grades or the total scaled score.","cbCaitpZkwMoMQcV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitpZkwMoMQcV","pdf",146227,"English","# Procedures for Grading and Scoring\n## Scoring scale and score conversion\n## Phase I grading and outcomes\n## Phase II re-grading process\n## Phase III resolution grading\n## Final scaled score recomputation and appeals rule","[{\"question\":\"How are New Jersey Bar Examination essay questions graded?\",\"answer\":\"Each essay is graded on a seven-point scale from 0 to 6 by a team consisting of a Bar Examiner and Readers.
