horizons of the Judaeo-Christiantradition.Religious problems have meant the problems ofmonotheism:how to prove,probabilify,or otherwise show it to bereasonable to believe in,the existence of God;how to meet thechallenges posed to theism from modern linguistic philosophyand from modern science;how to respond in theistic terms to theancient problem of evil;and so on.And the solutions proposedhave accordingly been relevant only within a monotheisticuniverse of discourse.  \nThis work should and will of course continue,and interestingnew developments will from time to time occur.But thelarger andmore radical development is the expansion of the subject into anintercultural discipline.For the philosophy of religion is inprinciple the philosophy of all forms of religion and not only ofthat which one either participates in or has reacted against.Andso the post-World War I explosion of information about thehistory and phenomenology of religions has begun to tempt orchallenge philosophers of religion to look at their subject in thecontext of the religious life and beliefs of the human race as awhole.  \nAs one philosopher's first steps in this new world of thought thepapers in this book are exploratory and tentative.The openingchapter has a different character from the rest in that it isautobiographical,describing three controversies encountered onthe way towards a global perspective.No one should inflictpersonal stories on anyone who does not wish to hear them,andthis chapter is entirely optional;nothing will be lost from the latermore philosophical discussions by
