English literatureand heretofore there have been but twobooks introducing it to children.Of thesetwo,Naomi Royde-Smith’s \"Una and theRed Cross Knight”concentrates on theaction and misses the spirit, besides beingtoo archaic and erudite in its presentationand format.Mary MacLeod's \"Stories fromthe Faerie Queene”published in 1900 in \nS \nLondon is splendid, but unfortunately not very well known and only availablenow in libraries. So Sister Charitina's little book will,we hope, introducetoday's children to the old classic so that they will go searching the MacLeodedition with its many, fine, pen drawings by A.G.Walker,and later, ofcourse, rout out Spenser himself. \nRedcrosse is Holiness and his lady Una is Truth for whom he does battle.Sister Charitina's retelling is stiffly moral and primly allegorical in the verydefinite fashion a child approves—just clean cut Wisdom and Goodness andPurity and Cruelty and Vice.\"Life\"says the author in her Introduction,\"is aquest full of adventure with dragons to kill.\"We move through the fairUna's adventures with wicked witches and dwarfs and satyrs and ogres, onlywe know them not as fairies, good and bad,but as Faith and Sin and Prideand Error. \nThis sort of thing is intense to a child. If you doubt, watch youngsters asthey get into Una's quest and the battling chivalry of her Redcrosse Knight.Jeanyee Wong's watercolor pictures are many, simple, and decorative, andhelped this beautiful little volume attain the distinction awarded it byThe American Institute of Graphic Arts—one of \"The Fifty Books of theYear.\"
