It highlights the scope covering remedies, family relations, citizenship, marriage, divorce, contracts, torts, crimes, transportation, corporations, wills, succession, juridical persons, and comparative law. It also notes expanded editions with updated jurisprudence, critical analysis of multinational corporations, and globally sourced documentation, while discussing classroom adoption concerns and REVIEW \nPRIVATE INTERNATIONAL LAW \nJoVITO R.SALONGA,U.P.Law Center,Quezon City,Philippines.1979xxiii,454 p. \nLike Public International Law,Private International Law,orwhat is now popularly known as Confict of Laws,is comparativelynew, and one of the least developed branches of the law in thiscountry. For that matter,it is not given the importance in legalcircles that it deserves. \nBefore the revision of the law curriculum in the Philippines, and, the subsequent revamp of the subjects given in the bar exam-inations,Public International Law and Private International Lawwere combined as a separate bar subject. In the bar examinationsnow,Private International Law was combined with Civil Law whilePublic International Law was fused with Political Law.This revi-sion,therefore,gave less importance to.these subjects.Conflict ofLaws is now treated more as civil law in nature which.should notbe the case. \nAs a result,Conflict of Laws is treated by law students andlawyers,as part of Civil Law,thus, giving a narrower concept thanwhat it is.Actually,Private International Law is one of the broadestsubjects in scope and in coverage.Private International Law coverspracticaly all subjects in the entire range of the,law such as Reme-dial Law,Persons and Family Relations,Citizeniship,Marriage,Di-vorce,Contracts,Torts,Crimes,Transportation,Corporations,CrimesAgainst Properties,Wills and Succession,Juridical Persons and Com-parative Law. \nThe rearrangement of these subjects in the bar examinationsmade the civilists happy but·it was not well received by the inter-nationalists of the country.Among the internationalists is JovitoSalonga, the author of the book now under review. One of the mostcompetent and prestigious writers in both public and private inter-national law,the author wrote his first edition while he was pur-suing a graduate degree in the Law·School of Yale Univedsity in1950 under the famous professor Myres S.McDougal.After severaleditions, this book was prepared by the author as participant in thePhilippine Jurisprudence project of the University of the Philip-pines Law Center, \nThis new edition is certainly a result of the long years of studyand teaching the subject.Still carrying the scholarly approach, caused from the work for a doctoral thesis, this new edition is en-riched with more recent jurisprudence and opinions of qualifiedwriters. The author treats the subject in its proper concept, not asa civil law textbook,as other local writers have done.Indeed,it isreally a private international law text in its broader sense includingthe jurisprudence and treatises throughout the world. The authoranalyzes judicial decisions as he also criticizes them.As will be noted, the author is particularly critical of some Philippine decisions inthe light of universally accepted doctrines. The author shows hispolicy science oriented approach that he has learned from Profes-sor McDougal. \nA new feature in the present work is the critical analysis ofthe effects of multinational corporations on the developing coun-tries like the Philippines. The book includes the statutes and Pres-idential Decrees to attract foreign investments in the country.(SeeChapter XIX,“Business Corporations,Foreign Sovereignty andInternational Enterprises”). \nThe critical and analytical treatment of the subject heavilydocumented from foreign sources, however, has deterred some lawteachers in the country from prescribing it as a textbook in theundergraduate school. They have their own reasons.Students oflaw in this country are prepared by law schools to pass the barcxaminations more than acquiring a broad approach to law.Somelaw teachers have said that the book is more fitted in a graduatecourse rather than as a fundamental study of Conflict of Laws. \nMoreover,with the exception of U.P.College of Law,Conflictsof Law is given as a 2-unit subject. The students, therefore, hardlyfind time to delve deeper into the foreign materials cited by theauthors. \nNonetheless,this new treatise of Dr.S","cbCaidTUCb6Q1Gue","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidTUCb6Q1Gue","pdf",318330,"English","# Book Review: Private International Law\n##
