The book draws on principles shaped by diverse American manufacturing methods and on observations from many plants in the United States and Canada, including extensive ordinance work during World War I. It outlines a structured approach: general industrial principles; term definitions; impacts on machine design and models; drawing dimensioning; mechanical production elements, equipment, gauges, inspection and testing; selective assembly and small-batch methods; and the service factor in practical EDITIONFIRST PRINTING \n丁33B \nCoPYRIGHT,I92I,BY \nTHE INDUSTRIAL PRESSNEW YORK \nL \nPREFACE \nWHILE many articles dealing with various phases of inter-changeable manufacturing have appeared from time to timein the technical press,no complete and comprehensive treatisedealing with this subject as a whole has heretofore been avail-able to those interested in interchangeable manufacturing inthe machine building and metal working fields. \nThe development of interchangeable manufacturing is closelyinterwoven with many distinctly American manufacturingmethods and processes.Every large American industry hascontributed its share to the progress made in interchangeablemanufacturing.Different plants working along independentlines have often achieved the same results by widely differentmethods. The author has attempted to define and emphasizethe underlying basic principles, using specific methods onlywhen necessary to illustrate the application of these principlesin actual manufacturing processes. He has gathered the in-formation upon which this treatise is based from many manu-facturing plants, both large and small,in this country and inCanada. He has seen every method discussed in successfuloperation, some in one plant, some in another—but not allin any one. \nFor more than ten years the author has been in constanttouch with many of the detailed manufacturing problems thatarise in the production of interchangeable mechanisms in largequantities.During the World War his work took him for fouryears into many manufacturing plants in connection with ord-nance work, first for private corporations and later for theOrdnance Department. When engaged in this work it becameapparent to him that the absence of common methods of inter-pretation of drawings, tolerances, and specifications, the lackof uniform gaging methods and misunderstanding of many of \nthe factors of interchangeable manufacturing, presented anurgent need for a complete treatise on this subject. \nIn arranging the material available on the subject of inter-changeable manufacturing, the author has first taken up thegeneral principles involved in the industrial application of thismethod of production, and has then devoted a separate chapterto the definition of the terms used,so that there will be no mis-understanding as to the meaning of the terms used later in thebook. The influence of interchangeable manufacturing processeson machine design and the purposes of models are then dealtwith, followed by a complete and minute discussion on thedimensioning of drawings intended for use in interchangeablemanufacturing. This is followed by a discussion of the principalelements that govern mechanical production, the equipmentrequired for interchangeable manufacturing (including machines, jigs and fixtures);the gaging equipment necessary;and theprinciples of inspection and testing.Special chapters are alsodevoted to the manufacture for selective assembly, and methodsused in small quantity production on an interchangeable basis. An entire chapter deals with the service factor in interchangeablemanufacturing, because in the final analysis no manufacturedmachine or device is ever purchased for itself alone, but isacquired for the service which it is supposed to render. \nThe Pratt &Whitney Co.,Hartford,Conn.,with whosecooperation this treatise is written, submits it to the publicas a part of the company's contribution to the art of inter-changeable manufacturing with the hope that it will assistmanufacturers and mechanics to employ effectively the prin-ciples of interchangeable manufacturing and to reap the benefitsthat a rational applic","cbCaileTcmPGZ93c","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaileTcmPGZ93c","pdf",19163046,272,"English","# Preface\n## Purpose and
