orthographic projection drawings into perspec-tive,and from perspective back to orthographic,asthese processes are constantly taking place in the vari-ous departments of manufacturing plants engaged inengineering construction.  \nUnder the theory that as a boy grows up he developsa natural tendency to visualize objects in perspectiveform,the author has made use of angular perspectiveas a means of introducing the subject of orthographicprojection,believing that a sound grasp of the lattersubject may be obtained by comparing it with a knownsubject.  \nAfter the fundamentals of both perspective and or-thographic have been studied thoroughly,we applythis instruction immediately when taking up freehandsketching,for here the student is required to use hisreasoning faculties to translate perspective sketchesinto freehand orthographic projection drawings.  \nFor certain other problems given in this same chapter,the student is obliged to make his sketches from awritten description of the objects which form the sub-  \nPREFACE  \nject matter of his drawings.Both of these methodsof presentation,i.e.,translation and written descrip-tion,are valuable aids in developing the student'spower to visualize mentally,both perspective picturesand the various orthographic views as well.Thetranslation method is followed later when taking upisometric projection,as the problems are shown in theform of orthographic sketches from which the studentis required to lay out his drawing of each object inisometric.  \nThe primary aim in presenting these various prob-lems in this fashion,is to enable the student to under-stand drawings readily,and to give him the ability tomake mental translations quickly when objects arepresented by either method,and thus to give the stu-dent confidence in his understanding of this vital fea-ture of engineering drawing.  \nWe have led up to the subject of\"working drawings\"by giving the student a thorough grounding in thetechnical methods followed in the production of thesedrawings;consequently,from this period on,it islargely a matter of applying these methods with intel-ligence in order to produce the creative draftsman.  \nThe
