Using that as abasis,it should then be possible to make a reasonedjudgement on a price for a particular camera;ajudgement that could take into account other factorssuch as condition,place and nature of the transaction.  \nLooking around the camera collecting scene in thiscountry,the most consistent and best documented sourceof camera prices by far appeared to be the record ofprices paid at the specialist camera and photographicauctions held at Christies(South Kensington).  We hadboth attended these sales on numerous occasions andknew that they were,and are,attended by both dealersand collectors,by professionals and amateurs alike,byhome and overseas buyers.In a word there is anestablished market-place where the bidding over aperiod should have fixed a fair market price.    We  \ndecided that a base period of four years wassufficiently long to determine the price of our'average'camera,a period covering approximately fortyauctions with a fair sample of cameras and prices.  \nOut of all the lots sold during this time we could,however,only use 'singleton lots'i.e.lots thatcontained one type of identical camera or a singlecamera.
