PRESIDENT’S COLUMN\n\nby Eloise Harbeson \nOn September 9,the Caucus ReviewCommittee composed of Phyllis GrayFLA Treasurer;Verna Nistendirk,Exee-utive Secretary;Bernadette Storck,Di-rector;and myself as President, met inTallahassee to review the Caueus andCommittee requests for funds and pro-gram assignments.Believe me,this wasno small task, for the requests for fundsfar exceeded the expected income of theassociation, and the requests for con-ference space exceeded the number ofrooms available at the hotel. The Commit-tee worked the entire day in an effort toresolve some of the conflicts so that arecommendation could be made to theExecutive Board for its fall meeting.Though the final requests will obviouslynot suit everyone,it was the committee'sgoal to try to fairly and equitably distrib-ute funds and to make available to themembership a stimulating and worthwhileconference. \nThe Exeeutive Board will be meetingin St.Petersburg at the Hilton Hotel onSept.22,and at that time, after earefuldeliberation, the entire board will makethe fina allocation of funds and finalize theplans for the annual conference. \n# THREEJOHN COTTON DANAAWARDS FOR FLORIDA\n\nThe 31st annual John Cotton CONSORT?\n\nby Marianne HoughMedical LibrarianTampa General Hospital \nIn the Tampa Bay area, medicallibrarians consort with each other, and onan organized basis too, since the fall of1975.Tampa Bay Medical Library Net-work(TABAMLN)eame into existenceas a full-fledged consortium as the resultof some very apparent handwriting on thewall. \nIn 1965 the Medical Libraries Assis-tance Aet ereated the Regional MedicalLibrary Program,a network of Basie Unit(hospital)libraries,Resource Libraries,Regional Libraries (eleven in all)and, finally, the National Library of Medicine. The response from physicians in the fieldto this highly-organized,smoothly-runninghierarchy for the delivery of biomedicalinformation was so tremendous and hascontinued to grow so rapidly that theNational Library of Medicine is finding itdifficult to cope. \nConsequently,they are encouraginghospital libraries in homogenous areas toorganize loeal consortia for purposes ofself-help.One way to do this is to eutrather drastically the annual quota of freephotocopies a basie unit library mayreceive from the national network.Infiscal \"76-77,the quota has dropped from250 to 100,after which each individualarticle or loan of an original will cost \n$3.25. \nAnother,more cheerful, way of en-couraging consortia to form,is the offer-ing of grants to subsidize them. These eango as high as $200,000 over a three yearperiod.TABAMLN expects to submit itsapplication in the fall of 1976. \nTABAMLN presently consists of 14hospitals and institutions in Hillsboroughand Pinellas counties:All Children's
