\nINNOVATIONS \nChair: Howard Degenholtz \nSupreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis suggested that states are the laboratories of democracy. In a year in which so much attention is at the federal level, this year we will focus on the ways in which we turn our gaze to the states as sources to learn about innovations in policies that support older adults. States have long been the incubators for new ideas that have had dramatic impact. For example, the notion of using Medicaid dollars to provide long-term services and supports in people’s own homes rather than in institutional settings had its start through state demonstrations. This symposium will feature innovative state programs that support caregivers for people with dementia, the creation of a long-term care insurance program, and models for paying family caregivers. Speakers will describe how states have created these programs and learned from each other, notable accomplishments and challenges in implementing them, and what they expect to see moving forward. They will also touch on where and how researchers can play an important role in studying and advancing state-level innovations.","cbCaikwaDaHZqQte","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikwaDaHZqQte","pdf",458101,"English","# Session 4100 (Symposium)\n## Abstract citation and session details\n## States as laboratories for democracy\n## Policy innovations for older adults\n## Medicaid home-based long-term services\n## Dementia caregiver support programs\n## Long-term care insurance and family caregiver payment models\n## Implementation accomplishments and challenges\n## Moving forward and researchers’ roles","[{\"question\":\"What is the symposium’s central premise about states?\",\"answer\":\"The symposium uses the idea that states function as “laboratories of democracy,” especially as a source for learning about policy innovations for older adults.\"},{\"question\":\"Which examples of state-driven innovations are highlighted?\",\"answer\":\"Examples include using Medicaid dollars to fund long-term services and supports in people’s own homes, along with programs for dementia caregivers.\"},{\"question\":\"What topics will speakers cover regarding implementation and next steps?\",\"answer\":\"Speakers will discuss how states created these programs, their accomplishments and challenges in implementation, what they expect to see next, and how researchers can contribute to advancing state-level innovations.\"}]","Presidential Symposium: Looking Over the Horizon - States as the Laboratory for Policy Innovations - Session 4100 | PDF",1790640996]
