fear\n\nAs an orphan in the Mai-Rut camp for Cambodianrefugees,Chang May-ying was a shy but happy girl. She hadparticular reasons for being more satisfied than most orphans inihe camp, since she had finally found her only livingrelative—an elder brother living in France. \nThrough the help of the Thai-China Refugee Service, shewould be able to join him in Paris, and her life was full of hopeagain. Her new-found happiness stands in stark contrast to thetime when Chao May-ying was faced with seemingly endlessdespair. When the \"witch troops,\"as May-ying called the forcesof the Pol Pot Communist regime, marched into Phnomh Penhwhenshe was only 12,her life crumbled to pieces \nThe family was forced to move to a labor camp, where her \nfather and uncles toiled endlessly, and her mother tilled the \nland.Unable to stand the crueliy and harshness, the family \ndecided to flee. But her father and brothers were massacred after \nbeing captured by Communist militia, and her mother died of \nshock soon afterwards. \nDuring the days that followed until May-ying arrived at a \nborder camp, she was to see many bloody and savage acts that \nshe does not dare to think about now.She only says that \n\"Everything was colored red\"as a result of Communist cruelty. \nLike most of the children who survived the holocaust, she \nwas at a loss of words to describe it.When UNESCO personnel \nvisited the Kao-l-Dang refugee camp, the largest of its kind onThai-Cambodian border, they handed out paper and crayons, \nand asked the children, aged between nine and 15 years,to give \nexpression to their thoughts. \nNot surprisingly, the color of red was seen everywhere, \namply showing the brutality and savagery the children had endured. One child, named Kong Vichien, portrayed himself as an \nemaciated boy with his ribs and belly protruding to show hismalnutrition. In front of him was an empty bowl.and tears \nstreaked his sad face. \nIn contrast, the Communist cadres were always depicted asstrong,well-built young men with mean expressions.Manywere shown torturing their captives, who included manywomen and children. \nIn fact, most o the sokdiers were just uneducated teenagerswho learned from Pol Pot's version of Communism the habit ofkilling for thrills, and the doctrine that
