MusicEducators Journal between the years 1955 and 1962.They are collectedhere as a convenience and have been arranged in chronologicalfashion. This is not meant to imply that these incidents present thetwenty most important events in music education between 1837and 1927. \nThe purpose of the Vignettes has always been merely to highlighta personality, method,or movement in music education in the hopethat history in small doses might be made palatable. Not all of theimportant events in history lend themselves to this approach.Ifthose that do help the reader catch the spirit of earlier times theauthor's purposes have been served. \nT \nHE SEVENTH ANNUAL meeting of the Western Literary Institute andCollege of Professional Teachers was convened at the Sixth StreetMethodist Church in Cincinnati on Friday,October seventh in the year1837.In addition to the professional educators from western and southernstates who had come together for a week to listen to the reading of paperson all types of educational subjects, the hall contained a considerable numberof lay citizens. These persons had undoubtedly come to hear a report onEuropean schools to be given by Calvin Stowe of the Lane Seminary faculty, who, with his bride the former Harriet Beecher, had spent the greater partof the past year traveling on the continent. But before they were to have thisopportunity there was a committee report to be read. \nCharles Beecher, another of the Reverend Lyman Beecher's children, rose to present the paper on\"Vocal Music as a Branch of Common SchoolEducation”which he had prepared in collaboration with Timothy B.Mason,in accordance with the request of the Institute made at the sixthannual meeting the previous fall.Beecher stated that after examining thequestions with which they had been charged,he and Mr.Mason con-cluded that(1)all men can learn to sing;(2)vocal music is of physical, intellectual, and moral benefit as a school subject;and (3)to bring aboutthe introduction of music in the schools, the popular mind must be readyto recognize its desirability and teachers of the common schools must bequalified. The Institute accepted the report and Louis Harding asked for
