\nHolyCOmmunion \nwith musicfor the congregation \n3 \nThe music has been composed by Christopher Dearnley.Organist of St Paul's Cathedral, and Allan Wicks,Organist of Canterbury Cathedral. \nBlack numbers indicate material which is mandatory.Blue numbers indicate material which is optional \n.3U \n# Preface\n\nThe new texts used in this rite call for new music:theold settings will not fit them. \nThe music offered here by Christopher Dearnley andAllan Wicks is written on lines similar to thosefollowed by Merbecke in 1550.That is to say, itstands half-way between the spontaneous inflexionsof ordinary speech and music deliberately composed. It also aims to meet an immediate need, providingsomething sufficiently simple for any congregation tomaster quickly. If it is tried and found wanting, atleast it might serve the purpose of being a guide forfuture attempts. \nMusic is provided for every part of the service wheresinging could be envisaged, and from it eachcongregation may choose as much or as little asseems fitting. It can also be used in conjunction withfully choral settings,as has been common, for \nexample,with Merbecke. There is,however, one wordof warning about the Thanksgiving. The insertion inthis prayer of choral, and perhaps lengthy, settings ofthe Sanctus, the Acclamations and the Doxologywould damage its unity and flow;and it is thereforeadvisable to keep to the simple and brief music \nprovided here. Also the music of the Creed has beenplaced in the Appendix rather than in the text:this isa lengthy piece, and congregations may find that theservice flows better if it is said. \nThe full music edition of this setting(published by theOxford University Press)contains a simple keyboardaccompaniment and straightforward harmonizations, which may be sung by a choir. \n,。 \nIt is provided in Canon B12'Of the Ministry of HolyCommunion'that only those who have been \nepiscopally ordained priest shall consecrate the holysacrament of the Lord's Supper. \n# Notes\n\n1 Posture.Wherever a certain posture is particularlyappropriate,it is indicated in the left-hand margin. At all other points local custom may be establishedand followed. \n2 Saying and singing.Where rubrics indicate that asection is to be'said',this must be understood toinclude'or sung'and vice versa. \n3 Seasonal material. The proper thanksgivings(28)areobligatory;but the seasonal sentences(1,37)and theseasonal blessings(45)are optional. The use of oneportion of the optional material does not necessitatethe use of the other portions. \n4 Series 2material.During the initial period of \nexperiment,it is permitted to use in certain sectionsthe texts prescribed in Holy Communion Series 2(excluding Appendix 2)instead of the texts printedhere. These sections are:the Salutation(3),theCollect for Purity(4),the Gloria in Excelsis(5),theresponses to the Gospel (11),the Nicene Creed(13),the Prayers(15),the Comfortable Words(17),the Confession(18),the Prayer of HumbleAccess(20),the Sursum Corda(26),the Lord'sPrayer(31),the Words of Administration(33),the \nAnthems(34),and the final prayer after \ncommunion(40).Where parts of the service arealso sung to well-known musical settings,it is \npermitted to use the words for which these settingswere composed. \n5 The Kyries(5).The Kyries may be said or sung inEnglish or Greek. In penitential seasons it is desirablethat this section should be used in preference toGloria in Excelsis. \n6 The Gloria in Excelsis(5).This canticle is alsoappropriate at sections 2,10,or 41. \n7 The Collects(6).The Collects are either thoseappointed in the Book of Common Prayer or thoseappended to Holy Communion Series i. \n8 The Lessons(7,9,11).The Lessons should beannounced in the order:book, chapter, verse.Theyshould be either those set out in Tables 1-3 appendedto Holy Communion Series 3,or those in the Book ofCommon Prayer,or any other lessons which are \nauthorized for use in the Church of England. It shouldbe
