require justification.Its defence lies in the title.Thisis intended as a selection of prayers not so much for,as of,theWorld-wide Church.It reflects the growing sense amongChristians in every land,and in Churches alike Older and Youngerin age and maturity,of a common experience.The earlierdivision of Churches into the\"sending\"Churches of landslong-evangelised,and the“receiving”or\"missionary\"Churches in countries which had only recently received theGospel,is no longer true to fact.On the one hand,the OlderChurches are experiencing a drift from Christianity;they arethus learning afresh their character as missionary bodies,andare faced with(an often healthy)loss of privilege,if not activepersecution.On the other hand,the Younger Churches aregrowing to maturity,are increasingly self-conscious,and areeager for a rightful independence.  \nAgainst such a background,the old,well-tried“missionary”prayers have become out-of-date,expressive of a situationlargely(though of course never wholly,or everywhere)past.The new type of prayer is only slowly emerging.It will comein due course to be written and Christians of every race will joinin the utterances of their fellow-Christians of other races.Weare able to include here a few,but only a few,of such prayers.But meanwhile the collection here offered by the S.P.G.is anattempt to express this new balance of mutual and commonprayer within the World-wide Church;a prayer which is mutual,one for another,on terms of a shared equality within the OneBody,a prayer also which is common as expressing needs andexperiences which are common to the whole Fellowship ofChrist's people.Such prayer is the circulation of the life-bloodof the Church.  \nThe devotions in this little volume are put forth with the hopeand desire that they may both express this new attitude,andenable those who use them to enter more deeply,by such use,into the realisation of membership in the World-wide Church.  \nThe main work of compilation was due to Mrs.ThelmaGlossop,who was called suddenly to the Church Expectantbefore the manuscript was finished;its completion was entrustedto the Revd.J.Gordon Cox,formerly a missionary of the Societyat Cawnpore.  \nIt is hoped that these prayers may be used in both public andprivate intercessions.The biddings may of course be sup-plemented as particular needs arise.Many of the prayers canbe readily adapted for the needs of special places.In the useof capitals and in punctuation modern editions of the PrayerBook have been followed.  \nHENRY DE
